Question: When a single box handles both DSS receiving and TiVo recording, is the MPEG-2 from the satellite recorded unaltered, or is it first decompressed and then recompressed, as would be the case if the DSS receiver and the PVR were in separate boxes? It would seem to me that recording the MPEG-2 directly would give superior results.

Yes, the DirecTV with Tivo all in one box records the MPEG stream directly. That is why it has the best recording quality, playback looks EXACTLY like the original.

The drawback is you can only Tivo DirecTV, not OTA or any other programming.
