"Dream On" (with Brian Benben) is one of the most underrated sitcoms out there, and certainly my all-time favourite: Does anybody have any info, is this due on DVD anytime soon?

best half hour adult comedy hbo ever aired.
    i would love this.
i still have several tapes of it somewere.

i still remember the teaser hbo showed before an ep was ever on.
it was a naked girl covered by clouds with a blue sky as backround.
i dont remember what teaser said tho'.

I haven't even thought of Dream On in years!

I would get this one if it gets a release.

I remember really enjoying this show, though my memories of specific episodes and lines are very hazy.

But, I do remember they used a lot of clips from old shows & movies, so this would be a clearance nightmare for HBO. I'd be very surprised if this show ever makes it to dvd.

This is one of my "dream" DVD sets. I have every episode rotting away on LP VHS. Would LOVE to replace them with shiny discs.

I'd love a set of Dream On discs. I loved the show when it was on HBO.

Great show. It also starred the woman from Just Shoot Me who played (on the latter show) the former fashion model Nina.

    I'd definately get this series.

"It also starred the woman from Just Shoot Me..."

Just Shoot Me is also one of my favourites. Too bad they just cancelled it.

I wonder if there would be trouble releasing Dream On given all the film clips/TV show clips that were on the show.

    Here's how many episodes exist:

    1990 - 1996 : 115 épisodes de 26 minutes, 3 épisodes de 50 minutes, et un de 60 minutes (6 saisons).

That's under 54 hours total, so, figure a pair of box sets would do it.

Star Trek factoid: Gates McFadden (Star Trek Next Gen's Dr. Bevery Crusher) and Brent Spiner (Star Trek Next Gen's Lt. Data) both guest starred on Dream On.

Actually I had read a while ago that releasing it was going to be a big problem due to the rights that would have to be granted. Someone was actually quoted as saying that some of the clips were so old no one was really sure who owned the rights. Even though they had permission from a studio to use something. Someone came out of the woodwork saying that he owned the rights and the studio was being sued. So there seems to be some fear associated with some of the older clips.

Dream On was a great series for mature audiences. I would only consider buying it if it was uncut. I'm sure those clips are a legal department's nightmare.

Actually, I don't think the clips would be a problem. The only reason the show was created in the first place was for Universal to find a use for its library of filmed TV episodes and whatnot from the 50s. Most of it was dreadful and would not have been profitable to release on its own, but used as "flashbacks"...

So all that footage is owned by the owner of the series. No problem at all.

What I am actually thinking is, how come one didn't have to get clearance to broadcast the series? How is broadcasting the series different from putting it on DVD? Why does releasing it on DVD require getting copyright clearance, and broadcasting doesn't?

It's the same as music rights issues -- it's not that you don't have to get clearance for broadcast, just that clearance for broadcast use is easier/cheaper to get than clearance for home video use, so most shows never negotiated for more than broadcast rights usage.

Again, the company that made and owns the series owns the clips as well. I saw and read stories about this at the time.
