im sure this has been a thread but i dont care.

If you had $200,000 and started over, what would you do?
$200,000 is just a figure, if you wanted a 7.1 system with MBL Radialstrahler's, then you might want to increase that budget just a bit.

lets keep it simple and stick to a few categories
    DISPLAY:
    AMPS:
    DECODER/PREAMP/RECEIVER:
    MAIN SPEAKERS:
    SURROUND SPEAKERS:
    CENTER SPEAKER:
    SUBWOOFER:
    DVD/CD PLAYER:

PS: if Ive missed categories, just make them up yourself.
Im sure we could add, dvd collection, furniture, popcorn machine, and what-not.

Geno, this is probably not what you are looking for, but:

I would pay off my house, sell it, and build a new one, with a theatre built to my design in it. Whatever was left over, if any would go to new equipment.

New equipment: a new DVD player, don't know which, mine's been acting up a little lately.

If I won $200K, this would have to be my start. If I won $2 million, I might be able to start looking at the mega-equipment.

I honestly don't know enough about equipment that high end to contribute meaningfully.
I do agree with Duane though, that I'd probably spend a good portion of it on building a dedicated room for my house.
Although, what I might do is donate the money to Robert Harris to restore It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, since being able to see that would be more of an upgrade than any hardware upgrade I could make. [IMG]

Ok, if I actually had the money:

I would have no idea - I've never even looked at equipment in that kind of range. I don't even like looking a little above what I have - scared I'll catch that upgraditus virus.

I would have to ask for some advice around here on where to start.

If I just so happened to win $200,000 to spend on a home theater the first $190,000 would go torward buying a bigger and better house featuring a dedicated theater room with teh final 10k going torward a new front projector and sound system.

I'm a gamer and an anime fan before an HT fan (plus I'm only 16) so I would first get the 3 current videogame consoles, some top quality games, and some excellent anime DVDs (I need demo material, don't I?). Then, I would give the rest to my dad (since he's got a lot more imagination and know-how about HT than me) and I'd let him design a room for the HT, build it, then buy and install the equipment.

State of the art theater with capabilities for DVD, VHS, LD, and Dish Network.

I'd like to be able to put on a theatrical-style setting. Have trailers and a short before the movie, have a computer out going to the screen...have curtains and lights controlled and stuff.

More like the theater = better.

Oh, and I'd probably use $1535 to buy a DVHS deck and one DVHS tape to leave running all the time, just so I could answer definitively how long you could play it before the tape started deteriorating. [IMG]

75K on a Faroudja or Runco projector and line quadrupler plus Stewart screen.

50K on a 7.1 Dunlavy speaker setup (SC-V's for mains)

    15K on a Meridian processor

    30K on Levinson monoblocks

12-15K on the Ayre A-1 DVD player

15K on Room treatments, cables, accessories.

    One can dream...

What's a 35mm setup cost? Used, if necessary. [IMG]

That's ok, I'm a hardcore cheapskate so I would still find a way to stretch that 200k. I'll spend 190k on the house + dedicated theater room, 10k on a projector, and just keep my current sound system[IMG]

On the sound side I would go with B&W Nautilus speakers and Lexicon amps and decoder! Don't know about projector and screen stuff...
