Dracula has been done to death at this point.

True, this is a very nice looking period version though. I'll watch this, wonder what Besson will bring to it that we have not seen before. I do think this suffers greatly coming after the recent Nosferatu picture from Eggers. Tough to compete with that.

When it comes to the Universal monsters, their stories have been told multiple times over, so there's nothing new to tell that hasn't already been told.

True. In this case, it will be much more about how the story is told that makes it attractive to viewers. We also have to remember that most of the Dracula films are considered “old” by a younger audience. What’s old (and dead) is new again!

I always assume when somebody wants to make a film of a story that has been done many times that they are doing so because they have found something about that story they feel they can and will bring something new to. Or at least a new perspective. Granted, from the trailer, this looks like it is taking the approach that Coppola took, leaning into the romantic angle of a love that lasts forever, or for centuries. Vlad as a lovelorn romantic that suffers endlessly and makes mistakes driven by the madness brought on by lost love.

I don't know until I see it, but that is the sense I get from the trailer. I think the story is in good hands with Besson, I think he knows how to overheat the material and squeeze something out of it. There is the problem of, yes, some of us have seen this story done many times and we know where it is going and so for us it boils down to how do these filmmakers present the tale.

Am I sick of Dracula stories? No, not if it is done well. I'll watch it and rank it against other Dracula/Vampire pictures. Maybe this is a good one, one that will be rewatchable over the years. Nosferatu from Eggers was so good though that this seems risky. Eggers did bring a lot to the table to give us a film worth revisiting. I think Besson can as well, so I will give him the chance to show me.

Honestly though, I fully understand the desire to see interesting filmmakers tackle projects that have not been done before or at least that have not been done to death. I had the same feeling seeing that Denis Villeneuve was going to make a Bond film. Yes, I love Bond and yes, I love Denis but what I want from Denis is for him to do stories that have not been done a lot and not to get involved with franchises, particularly huge ones.

The flipside being, if a great filmmaker tackles a well known story, there is the chance they make a great film from it because they bring some things to the table that others did not. Eggers did give us an amazing version of Nosferatu.
