This has been bugging the hell out of me for some time now, maybe you guys can shed some light on it for me. I like Dr.Pepper but cannot figure out what flavor it is. It tastes really familiar like I should know what it is but I can't figure it out. I've searched all kinds of Dr. Pepper websites but NONE of them mention the flavorings used. Thanks for any insight into one of the great mysteries of the world.

I don't know what the flavoring is, but I really dislike Dr. Pepper for some reason. I love Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Sierra Mist, and Gatorade, however.

The secret ingredient and that "flavor" you are
detecting is the juice of a dried plum... or more
    simply called "prune juice."

I have inside sources and a chemist in the family.

I use to love Dr. Pepper too. I believe the key to it's unique taste is Prunes. Honest.

Shucks...I see Joseph beat me by 1 minute.

I have also heard it's prune juice. Could be an urban myth though [IMG]

I've always thought it has a distinct aniseed flavour.

I think there's a hint of cinnamon in there somewhere.

My favorite Pepper knockoff is Wal-Mart's Dr. Thunder. The name sounds like a song that would've been written by an 80's hair-metal band...

Dr. Pepper is my favorite soda, but I've never really thought about the flavor. Dr. Schnee was a good knockoff.

i love Dr Pepper. My favorite knock off is Dr Skipper. As if there would be a doctor with a name like Skipper.

If I were to make a knock off at this point, I would try to one-up Dr. Pepper's credentials...like Pepper, phd. or Chancellor Pepper or President Pepper...

The whole Dr. ________ is wearing thin.

At one time I was a HUGE Dr. Pepper fan... until Coke bought them. I also think the flavor has been watered down somewhat and isn't nearly as good as it was in the 60's and 70's.
Wild Cherry Pepsi has become our flavor of choice.

Then there's this Vanilla Coke thing..... It is quite unique for a try but got old real quick.

I find some variance in the flavors of soft drinks, mostly Coke products, which tells me that either aging or incredient mixes affect the end result. Sometimes a Cherry Coke will be just great and sometimes not have any cherry taste at all.

I do yearn for the old Dr. Pepper taste though.... and no one can convince me that the incredients haven't changed!

To be honest, I wouldn't care if I found out the secret ingredient were dog shit. I like the taste, and it has yet to kill me.

I like Dr. Pepper, then Mr. Pibb, which has been replaced by Pibb Extra (and I dont know why since I detect nothing extra) then Pepsi, and then, if I am about to die of dehydration, I would drink a Coke.

And Diet Dr. Pepper has to be the best diet drink in existence (IMH,BA,O).

Incidentally, Donny, Coke doesn't own Dr. Pepper. It is bottled at some Coke bottlers though. That may be where you got that opinion.
