I have an older tv with only 2 HD inputs, but each gives me the option of using either component or dvi connections.

Now I want to add a third HD device. Can I use both component and dvi connections simultaneously on the same tv input if only one device is powered up at any given time?

The devices I wish to share the tv input with are a dvd player and a media adapter streaming photos from my computer.

I don't fully understand the question, but I think you can do what you want to do.
I think you're asking - "If one tv input is hooked up full time for say a cable box, can I use the other input for two devices that I would swap out?" Yes you can, no problem. The tv's video label for the input can only say one or the other, but who cares?

To clarify, tv input #1 is for the satellite box only.

I want input #2 to be used for either a dvd player via the component connection or a media adapter via the dvi connection.

Both the component and dvi cables would be always plugged into the tv input #2 jacks, but only one of the devices would be powered at any one time to avoid confusing the tv.

Is this possible?

yes it is possible.

Usually the display will default to component if the DVI signal is not present.

Good luck!!

PS: another option would a video switcher.
