I was looking through my collection today and noticed that I have old version of a few movies that have new releases. I would like to upgrade them all but I can't do it all at one time. So I was wondering if I could get some comments on whether the newer versions are worth getting.

    Alien vs Predator
    Day After Tomorrow
    Gremlins
    Hellboy
    Highlander 2
    Matrix Movies
    Predator 1 & 2
    Sin City
    Underworld

Didn't that episode of Seinfeld teach us all the dangers of double dipping?

I don't believe in double dipping unless it's for something like a major restoration. I don't care about nine hours of never seen before extras. It's just a ploy by the studios to get us to keep buying the same movies over and over again. 99% of the stuff that ends up on these "special collector, anniversary, super deluxe, everything but the kitchen sink editions" was available when the first release came out.

Actually, I can comment on several of these editions:

Sin City - This is realy no choice GO BUY THE UNCUT VERSION NOW!!!!

Gremlins - Depends on how much you like bonus features

I would say that double dipping on Predator 2 would be recommended, Predator 1 has a horrible transfer!

I hope that this helps with these 3 choices at least.

Be wary of the Canadian version of SC, check the various SC threads for its lackings...may not bother you, but make sure.

Day after tomorrow: don't bother at all IMO, I returned the 2-disc after comparing contents with the 1-disc, didn't seem to be a lot of interesting extras by the sound of it. 1-disc had a nice lenticular cover too.

I found the newest Predators 1 & 2 to be superior to the original releases.

Predator has three Region 1 releases, the first was non-anamorphic. The second release is anamorphic w/ DTS, and the third release is the two disc collector's edition. The second and third releases of Predator share the same video transfer (which isn't horrible, it's slightly above average IMO), so unless he wants extras, there's no point in upgrading. The bit rate might be little higher on the 2 disc collector's edition, but that's it.

I have NOT double dipped on these titles

    12 Monkeys
    Big Lebowski
    Casino
    Edward Scissorhands
    Get Shorty
    Heat
    Jaws
    JFK
    Leon
    Memento
    Shawshank Redemption
    Thing, The
    Witness

I may pick up The Thing if I find it cheap enough because of the anamorphic upgrade, but in general if the original release already had a decent anamorphic transfer I would rather spend the money on something else that I don't already have.

Re Predator 1 & 2: yeah, it's the new 2-disc versions that I meant you should get, if you like Predator. I had the original version of Predator 1 (non-anamorphic) so that was a no-brainer for me. As for Predator 2, I still have the previous anamorphic version, but it's been a while since I've watched it since I've had the newer one for some time too...anyway, I was pleased with the P2 2-disc, didn't think it was a waste of money. Both are available quite cheaply if you look around.

Generally, I will readily DD if the new release is anamorphic, replacing a non-anamorphic release. I will almost never DD for a new release if it just adds bonus features. I will often DD if there is a gross improvement in the new transfer, usually when I really like the movie.

I mostly DD for either director cuts, unrated versions or improved transfers. With the extras I normally only watch once anyway.

As far as I know, the Ultimate Matrix Box set only updates the first Matrix movie. The other two are identical to the previous release. But there are tons of additional stuff in this set as well.
