Been playing Doom 3 for about 3 hours. I hate to be the naysayer here, but... YAWN! I mean, the graphics are outstanding, the surround sound is very cool; I won't dispute these things. But the gameplay is woefully lacking in depth and the scares are all cheap. And annoyingly, most of the "scares" take the form of a wall (or what you THOUGHT was a wall) opening up right next to you with a monster behind it so that you can't do a thing to stop it from hitting you at least once.

And for the love of all that's holy, couldn't they have centered the flashlight on the targeting reticule instead of putting the beam in the bottom right corner of the screen? Also, your opponents in the game exhibit no A.I. whatsoever, instead just running straight toward you. The few times you see them hide behind stuff, it's a scripted event - something that will happen every time you play the game. That pretty much kills the replay value, in my opinion.

The website references in the game are another thing that bother me. Okay, you give me martianbuddy.com to find the code to the security locker. But can I access that site while in the game? NOPE! I have to save my game, exit Doom 3, wait 2 minutes for Doom 3 to release my system's memory, load my browser, type in the address, get the locker code, reload Doom 3, wait 2 minutes for my game to load, then I can open the locker and get some health. That's just STUPID. Then, they give you UA-corp.com as a reference, so naturally I exited the game to see if it gave you a code or anything. Did it? NOPE! Just some stupid animation. I wasted a good 5 minutes exiting and re-entering Doom 3 for nothing. Had they built in browsers that you could access in-game, I would have loved that feature, but having to exit sucks and completely draws you out of the game.

Honestly, this is one that I will play through once and then discard, so I'm kind of disappointed in the purchase. I hope Half-Life 2 gives us something deeper than this, because all the cool technology in the world can't save weak repetitive gameplay. If you want a scary game with a good story, check out Clive Barker's UNDYING. Id could learn a few things from that game.

In short: Doom 3 is a great graphics and sound showcase. It just isn't much of a gaming experience, which is what I was expecting. With other great games out there like Splinter Cell or Undying that have stories, keep you involved, suck you in until you forget how long you've been playing, build the tension slowly, etc., Doom 3 is just a disappointment. It's the same old crap in a shinier package. And after 4+ years of development, that's just not good enough.

I have no problem with the "A.I"...its DOOM for crying out loud...these are demons, imps and the like...they are interested in nothing more than ripping you to pieces, their health be damned. Not sure why people expected Human-like AI from the enemies in DOOM, the series has never been about that. Granted the 2 previous titles were more about the sheer number of enemies you encounter (something simply not possible with this engine), but that has been replaced with a very eerie atmosphere, which I find much more engrossing than 80 imps running at me.

Been playing for a couple hours, and I'm with Kami...very scary stuff.

Jeremy, did you ever play Half-Life? Did you like it? To me, this seems quite a bit like HL (and I don't mind the story stealing, because it's a damn good story), and I think the AI has been fine. Demens and Zombies run at you, while the "transformed" Marines hold back and try to take cover behind things. Seems pretty solid to me.

Oh well, to each his own...but I'm loving this game.

BTW, it's killing my system. I'm running:
AthlonXP 2200+
1GB Corsair 2700 DDR
Radeon 9700pro
I tried 800x600 high quality, and that was ultra-choppy...so I've been playing on 1024x768 med quality, and it's better but still choppy. I'm going to try 800x600 med next. Looks like an upgrade is coming my way.

MATT,

A few suggestions :

1) Enable "Triple Buffering" in the OpenGL control panel (display properties > Settings > Advanced > 3D TAB > Select OPENGL > Click Compatibility Tab, select enable Triple Buffering

2) Upgrade to newest CATs (4.7 = latest official drivers, 4.8 and 4.9 Betas have been released as well)

3) In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:Program FilesDoom 3base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

Find the line:

seta image_cacheMegs "32"

I changed 32 to 96 (depending on your RAM...set to 96-128 if you have =768).

Thanks for the suggestions, Rives...but they didn't really do anything. I already had the 4.7 Cats, and I had made the image_cacheMegs change from reading the PlanetDoom forums. Here are some benchies that I just took:

1024x768 Med Quality, T-Buffering disabled - 24.6 fps
800x600 Med Quality, T-Buffering disabled - 26.8 fps
800x600 Med Quality, T-Buffering enabled - 26.9 fps

(numbers from running timedemo1)

Looks like I may be screwed. Not sure why it's running so damn slow. Next up 640x480 Med, and then I guess I'll try low quality, but I'd rather not.

Okay, now I know there's a problem. I just tried 640x480 w/low quality and I got 27.1 fps. I highly doubt there's only 2.5 fps of diff between 640x480/low and 1024x768/med.

Crap.

Oh, I LOVED Half-Life. But other than the introductory level of Doom 3, it doesn't even begin to compare to the depth of Half-Life's story and how it develops as you go.

I understand that these are zombies, etc. and aren't supposed to exhibit the intelligence of humans... but let's face it -- the enemies in this game run straight at you like the ones in Serious Sam. The only time there's an actual challenge is when they do that annoying "drop the wall right next to you" thing and you have to quickly turn and fire. But that's just cheesy, and there's no variety there.

Another thing that bothers me: Okay, zombies and demons can hide in shadows, but even if you're standing in complete darkness they know you're there and come running. I'm not asking for stealth like Splinter Cell, but how cool would it have been to have moments where you're standing in the shadows and a creature walks right by you? It just seems to me that if they spent all this time getting the shadows to be very cool, they could have at least given them some FUNCTION in the gameplay.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not downing the game like it's Anachronox bad or anything. It just seems like other than the graphics, it doesn't live up to the hype. Is it good? Sure. Is it $60 good and will it have any replay value? Not so much for me. But I'll still play it to the end, I'm sure. I just hope they use this engine for better games than this one. Undying 2 would be a good start.

I'm also a little disappointed in the game. If you don't have a ridicoulous computer system, you can't take advantage of the graphics.

Have you tried playing any multi-player? I haven't yet, but that's always where the real replay value comes into play.

Like I said before, to each his own. I understand that you don't like the game, and I respect your opinion. I really haven't played enough of it yet (~1.5 hrs) to really get a feel for it...but I'm liking it so far, and the story is unfolding in a manner very similar to HL. You say that it lacks depth, but talking to all of the NPCs around the base and watching/listening to the audio/video clips on the PDA added a good deal of depth to me.

Well, I'll print off my computers specs to see if I can play this.

Just in case, what's a good sound card for 5.1 surround, a great video card (for games such as this), and what are good computer speakers?

Sound card- Audiotrak Prodigy 192, M-Audio Revolution 7.1/5.1, and of course the Audigy's with tons of bloatware.

Video card- 9800pro or 6800GT, depending on budget

Computer speakers- look at what Klipsch has to offer

Picked up the game today at Best Buy and been playing about 90-120 mins. I am running a Shuttle SN45G, 1GB RAM, 2500 barton@205FSB, 11x multipler, BFG 6800GT stock speeds.

1024x768, high quality settings
4xAA=58
2QxAA=65 (this is what I am running to play it)

First, the game's retail price is $54.99. I saw several mentions of $60 so I thought I would point that out. Also, Circuit City advertised in Sunday's LA Times that it would have it for $44.95. Since the CC ad mention August 6th availability I will wait till the weekend to price match to BB.

Thoughts on the game...

Overall, game play is nothing really new. Using your PDA to pick up clues/information adds a little to the story line but not a lot. I was concerned about game play based on the initial posts I read about the darkness of the game, along with having to choose between a flashlight or a weapon. It sounded like ID had just used darkness to make the game tougher/more intense without really adding any atmosphere. I was very wrong. The game's graphics really do make everything feel right. It is hard to explain. I find myself slowly moving through the initial levels. Very carefully examining my surroundings. Making my way to my objective. There are some predictible moments to be sure. Opening a door for the first time, expect something to jump at you. Find some health, armour or ammo, expect a bad guy to be nearby to put it to good use.

Of course, I am very early into the game. So far, I really like it.

I love the decision to make the player choose between the flashlight or a weapon. There are some cool sequences later on where it's pitch black and you're fighting enemies. You have to either switch back and forth, or shoot at them based on the sound with 5.1, which works.

I think they've done an amazing job creating a living world. All the UAC videos, the fact that you can clone people's PDAs and read their e-mails, complete with futuristic spam ("Clone porn") is cool, and it rewards you for going through everything with codes to ammo lockers and things like that.

The AI point's already been mentioned. They're demons and imps, they're not going to be that interested in finding cover. The transformed marines do hide behind barrels or support beams, but even they're stupid. Just move out of their view and they'll come running, ready for you to shoot them point-blank with a shotgun.

I'm not happy with the $55 price, or the $1200 I'll be spending to upgrade my two year old system, but I'm enjoying the game.

Fans of BBC's The Office might appreciate this. Later in the game you pick up the PDA of a guy named Rob Finch. One of his e-mails is from a guy named Brent Davis.

The text is:

Finchy,

Don't forget that Trivia Quiz Night is this Wednesday. Do yourself a favor
and brush up on Shakespeare, mate. If we lose to those twits in
administration again, we'll never hear the end of it.

Brent

In reference to the episode where David Brent and Finch lost trivia night on a Shakespeare question.

Loving it so far.

For speakers, I just bought some Logitech Z-680s. Will let you know how they sound once I get em hooked up. Upgrading from the $80 creative 5.1 setup which is 'ok' I guess.

I'd really love to see this on a high-end rig. Have to wait for the Xbox version before I can play this game.

Okay, I just got to Alpha Labs Level 3. Let me say this...the spider-guys...very scary. They kept popping up/down from god knows where and attacking me. Very creepy.

Jeremy, I think you mentioned in one of your posts that they should use the shadows to have enemies sneak up on you. Well, I was in a room and turned around to see two Imps right on my ass. They were silent and I had no idea they were there.
