Dolby Digital with only 3 speakers (1 Viewer)

I have been lurking for a few days now and decided that it was time to register so that I could ask a question.

I currently only have 3 channels (left, right and center). My Pro Logic receiver is about to be replaced and I was wondering could I connect the optical digital output from my satellite receiver into my new receiver and get the front 3 channels of dolby digital.

Also if this is possible, will I still get sound when the signal is not dolby digital (news, etc) if the only connection is optical?

Yes you can play DD with the front three speakers only. Go into your receiver's setup menu and select "No" or "None" for surround speakers, that's it.
