Anybody know why these two top-notch Steve Martin comedies are *only* available on DVD in Full-Frame format? ...... The Jerk and Parenthood.

And then we've got to pay nearly $20 for the FF-only version (of Parenthood). Ick! [IMG]

Anybody privvy to any news re. "Wide" re-releases of these Martin films?

(Not to mention other notable FF-only films like Vacation and Grumpy Old Men. Two more I'd love to see "Wide".)

Unfortunately, this sentiment has been around for over a year-and-a-half, and the situation hasn't really improved much...

On the other hand, those two and The Man With Two Brains were the only non-widescreen releases we could think of at the time. The rest were simply non-anamorphic for the most part, and almost all bare-bones releases.

Maybe he STILL doesn't own a DVD player. Hey, Steve! How's that BetaMax working for you? [IMG]

And what about Vacation?!! (Not that it's a Martin flick.)

Have always wondered why it's Full-Frame only? (Well, at least that one's cheaper, in the 10-dollar range.) [IMG]

Well I'm not so sure it's Steve Martin's choice. As someone pointed out, most of his later films on dvd are widescreen and Steve Martin is certainly not the only one with non-anamorphic dvds coming out of studios like Universal and Touchstone.

It probably has a lot more to do with the dreaded 'comedy' factor (i.e., comedies and 'family' films don't get no OAR/transfer quality respect), and frankly I feel lucky to have films like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid in widescreen even if it is non-anamorphic and not the un-cut version. Yeah, this drives me crazy, too. Speaking of comedies that deserve widescreen, what about Happy Gilmore? Full frame only? I had to make sure I bought a used copy so that I didn't send the message with my $$$ that I am pleased with full frame!

Actually, it's because those two titles were released in the era when WB thought they could save money by dumping their second-tier-and-below titles to DVD using old pan-and-scan VHS/laserdisc transfers...

It's all earlier Universal "family" releases, same with Kindergarden Cop and Twins. [IMG]

I'll go check worldwide releases and see if there is any widescreen version of those 2, there aren't for those Arnold comedies.

No, R2 and R4 are all also pan&scam. [IMG]

Yep, I would have picked up The Jerk and The Man with Two Brains if they were in widescreen. Now that I have a widescreen TV there is no reason what-so-ever for me to pick up a pan and scam again.

Too bad my old P&S version of Honeymoon in Vegas will remain unwatched. That was another of my favorite comedies. Any plans for an update on that one?

Also Steve didn't direct those two films so even if he was concerned it isn't really his call....or even Mr.Reiner's or Mr.Howard's, it's the studios call and they don't seem to like to revisit Good titles!!

I just watched my Parenthood DVD last weekend and was wishing it was widescreen..with all other Universal Ron Howard movies getting the SE treatment I can't believe this one got screwed up so bad.

I have Novocaine and L.A. Story in wide, so it's not like none of his movies are available properly. I think the Steve Martin thing is just a coincidence here. There's no Steve-Martin P&S conspiracy.
