I enjoyed Ron's peek at Planet of the Apes, as well as a lot of the others, such as Legally Blonde. But I've only been reading here since around july...
the press release for glitter made me think of this, but has Ron ever just ripped a disk or movie a new asshole? I would like to see a couple of his scathing reviews, if anyone has a link...

Ron generally throws the press releases directly into a post, so all the blurb you see for Glitter is Columbia's own bullshit machine.
I think with reviews he only spends time doing them for the discs he likes.

I was wondering the same thing this morning. I got Swordfish last night based on his review, was pumped and ready, but ended up having a hard time staying awake watching it. I re-read his review this morning and felt that it was a bit fluffy. I need to spend some time with this disc before I really dismiss his reviews altogether.
Regardless, I appreciate his reviews from an HT enthusiast perspective and realize that opinions/reviews on material are subjective. I guess I should remember "buyer beware."

Obviously you have not read his review for Monsters, Inc. and the Episode II trailer.

Not if he watches them. :)
I'm sure his screener of Zardoz still has the shrinkwrap on it....

hey, i wasn't calling his stuff "fluff"; the above mentioned swordfish review specifically called it "guilty pleasure viewing" which implies right off the bat that it isn't going to win any awards- it's a big budget action-fx flick with a couple of really cool scenes and a nice rack on display :)
I think I recall a statement earlier in which it was alluded that he only reviews things he likes; I just thought it would be fun to see him utterly tear something apart in the same upbeat and informal tone that he tends to write his reviews in.

That alone is not able to save this film or even make it a "guilty pleasure." There are dozens of better action sequences in other films. And the rack on display was very underwhelming , IMHO.

I hate answering these questions only because
it seems I am constantly having to defend myself
on this topic.
A few things....
Studios send me screeners. I *must* review a
large percentage of those screeners in order to
keep my screener privileges.
I *generally* pick and choose what I wish to
review based upon what I think I will like. That
is the reason why my reviews are usually more
favorable than not.
Swordfish was NOT a rave review. It said
"guilty pleasure". That means that it wasn't a
greatly acted or well produced film, but nonetheless,
I really enjoyed it. Most of the people that saw
Swordfish agreed with me.
Scathing reviews? Not many -- but do a search for
ANGEL EYES and PLANET OF THE APES TV
COLLECTION and you will read a generally
negative review.
I don't go out of my way to write what some
may consider "fluff" or positive reviews. I will
always give my HONEST opinion and I'll trash a
movie or DVD if I think it is bad. I just haven't
come across anything yet that I really hated.
When I do -- you'll know!
