I have Avia and cant seem to find individual test tones (like from 15Hz up) of low frequecies to test my Sonosub with. I see a sweep of tones, but it goes very fast. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

No, Avia does not have anything but that LFE sweep that indeed goes by too fast.
Borrow an audio generator from a friend; you can select any freq you want and hold it there as well.

just a quick note on the test tones. The BassZone test CD that I put together for those on the basslist a couple years ago now does have individual sine waves, as well as warble tones. Here is a link to the page with the complete track listing of what's on it:

Count me in as a user of the BassZone CD, it comes in handy, and it's amazing what low frequencies at high SPL can do to ya! Wear ear protection if you plan on testing for low frequencies at 95dB or higher for long periods of time. It may not feel like you are damaging your hearing, but you will.

Anybody use NCH Tone Generator from www.nch.com.au/action/index.html ? I recorded a slew of .wav files and burned a CD. Seems to do the trick, but I wonder how accurate (db wise) it is.

    Keith,
I haven't used that program (though I did see it out on the net), instead I downloaded SpectraPlus (30 day eval), used it's signal generator functions to create a bunch of sweep and individual frequency WAV's. Haven't burned it on a CD yet, it's been on the list of things to do for a couple of weeks..

The NCH tone generator is quite accurate with any normal sound cards.
It's a great little program, it's unfortunate more people don't use it.
I wish they would add pink noise, it's better for audio than the white noise option.
It's the only program that I know of the will generate EXTREMELY low tones.
Dangerous if people use the square wave function or use TOO low a test frequency

BassZone CD, NCH tone generator ....
Has anyone confirmed that the CD tones were recorded "totally flat" in their amplitude....... across the entire range?
Same with the NCH generators output ?

Another great set of discs are the Autosound 2000 test discs ... Not sure how familiar you may be w/ Car Audio but the guy who produced these discs is Richard Clark who was King Midas of Autosound ... You can get this set of 5 discs for 25 bucks I think ... Alot of it is Car based but there's some very useful stuff on them for home audio ...
He can be reached at [email protected]

Yes, the tones on the Basszone Test CD were all recorded at 0dB full scale. After the problems that Stereofile had with one of their test CD's and the warble tones, I made sure that all my tones were matched in level. They are recorded at full scale though, so go easy on the volume and ease into things.

    John,
Which Stereophile test CD's had the level problems?? I have been using Test CD #3 for over a year now to tweek my E.Q. and have never heard that the Stereophile Test CD's had mis-matched levels.
    Please elaborate.

Remember that when one is doing sweeps, that the frequency response of the RS SPL meter isn't very flat...dropping off below 100 hz and above 2 khz.
Usually the "flatness" of the frequency response doesn't matter too much (pink/white noise), but with sweeps, it really comes into play.
There is a frequency response correction chart I'll e-mail to anyone who wants it...just e-mail me.

Any of you getting any slight pops with the tones you've generated? I've tried both the NCH Tone Generator and Cool Edit and there is always a slight pop at the very beginning and end of generated tones. This occurs when I playback the tones on my PC and also after having burned the tones to CD and played them on my CD player.

    Terry C,
I just got my BFD last week...VERY anxious to start playing, so I went to download the step tones from your site http://members.tripod.com/~terrycthe...um/page12.html but couldn't get them to download. My Miocrosoft Media Player kept popping up when I hit the link and gives me an error that the file could not be found...am I doing something wrong? Is it still available for download?
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris

    John,
Are there any plans on implementing a 6 cycle tone burst signals in the future?

    John,
Also can you gives us details on the upcoming vol 2 and vol 3 test cds? What will they contain, when they will be available and how they 'compliment' the current vol 1 release?
