The region 1 edition is a 9-disc set with an interview with Burns on the Charlie Rose show and some other goodies. Does the region 2 edition have this?

The region 1 goes for about £50-75 (and may be customs charged), but the region 2 can be had for £35 at Splash DVD. I have read that the region 2 is the complete 12-hour version, so the only thing I really need to know is if the region 2 has the same or any extras as the region 1 edition.

Any help would be most appreciated.

my experience with Ken Burns' Jazz tells me that most likely this will also be edited for content. The beeb cut more than 4 hours of Jazz which is also reflected in the release of R2 Jazz.

    hope this helps

Play.com list the running time as 11 hours, 44 minutes: http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page...2&title=113229

Could it be that the region 1 discs are single-layered and the region 2 is dual-layered? 12 hours over 9 discs is 1 hr, 33 min per disc, but over 4 it it is 3 hours per disc, which is manageable. If the region 2 is complete, then I'd go for it - £35 is a damn good price for such a great piece of work. I'd don't fancy paying £70 for the region 1 - I've got my sites on the 7-disc New York documentary by Ken Burns' brother, Ric Burns, which is an AWESOME piece of factual filmmaking.

    Cheers, Oscar! [IMG]

It could be double-sided, too, with programs on side a and side b.

Amazon.co.uk lists this as 704 minutes in length and amazon.com says 750 minutes. With PAL speedup, do you think the content is all there?

Gordon, many of the extras on the R1 edition of Ken Burns Civil War are missing from the R2 (and the R4); I would be very wary.

Luckily, I have the region 1 edition of The Civil War. Got it from PlayUSA.com for £56. Awesome documentary.

I would imagine that the region 2 edition of The West will be sans extras as it is from the same company as The Civil War. But The West doesn't have as much extras as The Civil War, and the saving is considerable, so I'm not sure how to proceed.

    Thanks, John! [IMG] [IMG]

Can't remember where I read it (I think it was a review of the R4 Civil War which was the same as the R2), but the R2/4 picture came in for some stick.

How's your R1; I would love this set (maybe Father Christmas will bring me one...)

The region 1 picture quality is fine for a video-and-16mm production. All of the PBS DVD transfer are considered to be of excellent quality.

These are also excellent companion pieces to The Civil War:

The Way West: The Approach Of Civilization

The Way West: Westward The Course Of Empire Takes It's Way

Lewis And Clark: The Journey Of The Corps Of Discovery

Captivating, fully enriched historical documentary filmmaking at it's best.
