So I pull into the gas station to fill up the tank and in the stall next to me there is a beat up old Ford Thunderbird with smoke billowing out of the tailpipe and a woman standing over a 5 gallon Jerry Can (sp?) with a cigarette dangling out of her mouth.

I asked her why her car was running while gassing up and why she was smoking a cigarette over the fuel container. She said it was none of my business and I should leave her alone.

Am I crazy or was this person being incredibly stupid? One of my pet peeves is people who do stupid things to endanger people around them. It really got me riled up.

uhh... yeah, she was dumb. It's not liquid gasoline that's flammable, it's the vapor. If her cigarette got too close to those lovely fumes, let's just say she would be smoking without the aid of the cigarette. [IMG]
Was she filling a non-approved container with gasoline? And did she have it on the ground or on the car? It's supposed to be on the ground to avoid static discharge which can ignite the fumes.

Oh, she was following all of the necessary safety precautions for the container itself - plastic, 5 gallon, on the ground. It was the burning ember sticking out of her mouth that caught my eye [IMG]

You should have offered her a styrofoam container for next time.

I've seen this situation at my local gas pump, too. How stupid can people get? VERY. I just don't understand why people have such blatant disregard for the lives of others, not to mention their own. It's a very frightening age we live in.

If I see anyone smoking at a gas station, I'll be out of there before you can say "bad idea."

This reminds me of a time I stopped for gas and at the pump next to me was a seemingly single mother holding a baby, smoking a cigarette filling up her car with it still running.
    I left.

It doesn't take too many active brain cells to figure that handling flamable liquids while smoking isn't the best of ideas.

Not near the gas pump. At the emergency shut off button, which is some distance from the pumps.
But I don't recall seeing any "No cell phone" signs on the gas pumps. There are signs that say shut off the engine, don't smoke, use approved containers only, put the container on the ground, don't get back in the car while pumping gas, and if you drive off without paying you'll lose your drivers license, but nothing about cell phones.
I did some searching. Apparently such signs do exist. Perhaps they haven't reached my part of the country. It's just as well, because the danger is more e-mail urban myth chain letter than real. Anyway, unlike smoking, it is not (yet) illegal to use a cell phone at a gas station in the U.S. (Except in Cicero, Illinois. Apparently the city council of Cicero got the chain letter and felt compelled to pass an ordinance.)

No cell phones at the pumps in Arkansas either but I see the intellectually challenged among us talking on their phone at the pumps all the time.

Yeah, she prolly blew the father up doing that.
