    hey all -

do calibration tools (like avia or dve) still apply? i'm sure they're useful for color, brightness, etc -- but what about the more "advanced" tests?

are the same types of techniques used by isf folks on regular crt rptv's still used on these newer fixed pixel displays?

    just curious...

    Greetings

Pretty much yes ... but different approaches for contrast since we now look for white crush as opposed to blooming or lines bending. Other things for contrast include setting it at a point where there is the least discoloration in the grayscale sweep. Too high contrast adds colour to the grayscale ...

Colour decoding is still the same thing.

The test discs are still fine for calibration ... I just use some patterns in a different way.

    Rolling with the punches ...

    Regards

Yes ted, calibrations still apply, but because the displays function differently, what you are hunting for is different. Also, you don't have a wear issue, you are attempting to *mazimize* the available CR range of an LCD/LCOS/DLP display.

See here as well for more elaboration on what Michael said: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...light=contrast
