I have a Samsung dvd-n501 player that I've been perfectly happy with for years. Tomorrow I'm receiving my 1st HDTV (Toshiba 47h84). I was planning on buying a new DVD player but I found out that the Toshiba upgrades all signals to 1080i.

Will I get a boost in picture quality from progressive scan or should I spend my money on a HTiB?

If you input progressive scan, the TV will also convert that to 1080i.

It is hard to say whether a progressive scan player will give you a better picture, you may well get a worse picture. Inspect the picture when using your existing DVD player.

If the TV has a "Faroudja with DCDI" (brand of de-interlacer) any improvement from a progressive DVD player will be minimal.

If you don't have a progressive DVD player you cannot find out whether the TV locks in 16:9 which is such a horrible problem that you should return the TV and choose something else.
