I have an HTPC that is connected to my Yamaha rxv661 receiver via HDMI from my NVIDA Gforce GTX650 graphics card. Do I need to buy a sound card for 7.1 or is my graphics card sound processing enough? Sorry I think this is a really dumb question and that's why I can't find an answer.

Games should be able to send it native, software based sound, but you will need all the right drivers. Windows can be finicky

You do not need a sound card. The nvidia base driver does proper hdmi audio handshake
