I heard that Carl Reiner didn't want any of the bloopers or outtakes to be included as part of the extras for the season sets of the Dick Van Dyke show. I guess he felt it demeans the show somehow, but I think it would've been an awesome addition to the sets' extras. In the past, I remember seeing plenty of blooper clips from the show on several midnight "Blooper" movies at my local theater. I know these clips exist, but I was wondering if they won't appear on these sets, are there any other DVDs that they may appear in?

Doubtful, since what you heard is pretty much true. If he had wanted them on the DVD, I'd think they would be on one of if not all of the season sets. They're kind of running out of stuff related to that show that they can put on DVD. I'm sure David VP will add to what I've said, since a thread involving Dick Van Dyke gets his attention like a moth is drawn to a flame. He knows what he's talking about...but, I'd say the chances of ever seeing these bloopers on DVD are not good.

I believe these bloopers may also exist on some VHS. I remember a friend bringing over an old Bloopers VHS back in the 80s, and it had plenty of bloopers from Dick Van Dyke, M*A*S*H*, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Carol Burnett Show and others.

Yes, that was done by Goodtimes on VHS and I can remember some of those bloopers.

#1-Dick does a PSA spot from the set and blows his name.
#2-While doing another PSA spot about dental care, he breaks up because as a joke someone wrote on his cue card, "Healthy teeth means fine tobacco."
#3-Blooper from "A Bird In The Head Hurts." Millie asks, "Why did it only pick on Richie?" Long pause as Rob suddenly says, "I don't know!" (forgotten line).
#4-Several bloopers featuring Don Rickels from "The Alan Brady Show Goes To Jail" where he ends up slipping and taking a prat fall.

I, too, would love to have some bloopers/outtakes on the DVD-on-DVD sets. But, unfortunately, Carl Reiner has stated that he didn't want to have his cast seen "out of character" while on the set of the show.

Too bad, too, because many great bloopers do indeed exist from TDVDS. Several are pointed out by Eric above. Although I've never seen ANY of those he mentioned.

I have an "unauthorized" (hence: NOT labeled "Van Dyke Show Blooper Reel") VHS video made several years ago titled "From The Cutting Room Floor--Comedy Outtakes--Vol. 1" (Never have seen a "Vol. 2"). And this tape, which lasts 24 minutes, includes many great outtakes .... many of them I've noticed are from the 5th & final season, including a great one that has Richard Deacon and Dick continuously blowing their lines while at lunch in the episode "The Bottom Of Mel Cooley's Heart". After about six takes, Mel (Deacon), who had to take a sip of wine on each take in the scene, gives some great ad-libs as he pretends to now be bombed from all the booze he's consuming. [IMG] Got a nice crowd laugh too.

I've wondered, though, why Mr. Reiner apparently has no problem with the fine game-show extra feature being included on the S.2 set (when the cast appears on "Stump The Stars"). The gang is certainly out of character there. But -- I guess Carl only objects to showing them out of character while they're actually saying their lines on the soundstage. I can respect that decision....but those outtakes would sure be nice to have on DVD though. [IMG]
