My Sony XBR (about 20 years old and still used daily) has a pair of the APM speakers that are mounted on the cabinet, but can be removed to enhance separation.

I've also got an '85 model Sony KV-25XBR with those speakers. One of 'em finally gave out a couple of months ago. I bought a pair of those cheap KLH indoor-outdoor speakers and perched them on top of the OEM ones.

The set is still great otherwise, after 19 years of almost daily use. Has needed one repair, a new tuner in the mid-90s that cost $95, and I had to replace the remote when my first ex-wife's kids gummed up the original with peanut butter. I got an oem remote for $95 that's worked fine for over 10 years now.

That Sony was the only thing I insisted on keeping when I got my first divorce and has outlasted yet another marriage.

I had a set on a micro-chassis stereo (whole system of half sized separates and speakers that locks together)

I always thought of it as a gimmick though.

At the time, in Sony's catalog, they had standalonee APM speakers and they were actually very expensive, part of Sony's ES line. They even got rave reviews in Stereophile at the time.
