My family is considering putting in a dedicated theater in the basement this fall. There is a budget, so we thought about doing what we could on our own. I spoke to Acoustic Innovations and they charge $380 for an 4'x 8' panel. Is there any way to make these yourself for cheaper, or are the materials used what drives up the cost?

This should get you started. I have seen many ways of doing it. Another way is to get one of the following and cover them: CertainTeed Black acoustaboard (1").Knauf Black Wall and Ceiling liner (1") TheaterShield (1")

I did my HT basement panels using the concept mentioned by Brett Robert above.
You can see my HTF page at http://www.hometheaterforum.com/bbs/...ent/28723.html
Be sure to click through to my personal HT page to see even more details on the acoustic panels.
