I've recently picked up a stand alone DVD player that also plays Divx files. When I playback a Divx file of a TV show that has widescreen black bars, the player seems to add black bars to the black bars resulting in the picture looking 2:35:1. The ratio is fine when it's played back on my PC. Its probably the limitations of the player but is there any piece of software that I could alter the ratio of the file to compensate for this?

At the DVD player, you may want to turn off downcoversion (4:3 display), and set it to output to a 16x9 display.

Check the aspect ration of the file. If the file itself is 4:3 in aspect ration, it just includes the "black bars" then your player will not "crop" them out, thus compounding them.
