I am thinking of benq 8250.

I want biggest possible screen area. My room is 15 x 22.

How far back can I put the unit before quality degrades?

    Graham,
I can't speak for the Benq, but I have the Infocus X1 and in the spec it says it can project up to 200", however i've heard that it isn't recommended to go beyond 150" because loss of light starts to become apparent.

Considering that, I would imagine it's a safe bet that you'll be fine no matter where you put the Benq, you shouldn't lose anything noticable with the dimensions you listed.
