I recall recently seeing a question on another Disney thread regarding the release of this title.
According to the R2 Project this will be arriving in the UK on 4 March 2002, so I guess the R1 edition may be announced soon. The Press Release is at:

It would be good news if this showed up in R1 in the spring, since that'd mean they've reconsidered their stupid, once a year Platinum release schedule. It's hard to imagine that some titles may not be coming until 2008 or something ridiculous like that.

Mitty Sleeping Beauty is not a Platinum title.
It belongs to the Gold Collection.
I Germany this movie is released on November 15th 2001.
    In region 1 I've only heard Q1 2002.

Quint, everything I've read, including this site lead me to believe that it will be a Platinum title.

    Mitty and Quint-
It would appear that what films are considered
    "Platinum" titles has changed.
I am quite sure that The Little Mermaid
was one of the titles original amongst the ten.
It now appears to have been replaced by Sleeping Beauty,
(at least according to that website you referred
to, which calls itself "this UNOfficial website")
    Hence, it could be wrong.

The site mentioned admits at the bottom that it is an unofficial site...more proof is in the fact it is being hosted by tripod (note the popup window).
From what I have heard, Sleeping Beauty should not be on the list and The Little Mermaid should be. Also, the order seems wrong.

Here is a link to the Disney press release on the Platinum Collection. It identifies The Little Mermaid as one of them, not Sleeping Beauty.

Two weeks ago I've gotten an email from Disney with listed
    the 10 Platinum titles.
Sleeping Beauty was NOT on that list and is being released
    ealy next year.
Around the world the Platinum titles will be released in the same way that Disney is releasing them in Region 1.
Sleeping Beauty is on on every list in Region 2 as a normal
Special Edition and not a Platinum.
    This says enough for me.
In any case I hope Disney will release it soon so that I can
    add this to my collection.

And Peter Pan apparently is being released next year as well. Although I don't know if it's part of the Gold Collection or not.

"...Bear in mind that this is for the UK R2 PAL version... "
...which, as we all know, will sound absolutely terrible, what with the c.4% (=c.one quarter tone) 'speedup' inherent to the PAL 25fps video system unavoidably, inevitably, utterly and totally ruining Tchaikowski's lovely, lovely music...

How could it be 16:9 when the original was 4:3, even in the theater?

Sleeping Beauty was filmed with a 2.35:1 ratio like Lady and the Tramp was.

While the storyline of Sleeping Beauty
is hardly breathtaking, the art direction on this
film is probably the best of any Disney animated film.
The painted backdrops are simply stunning,
which is why I am eager for this work to arrive
    on anamorphic widescreen DVD.
And yes, just to concur with the poster previous
to me, it was shot on 70mm with an AR of approximately
2.35:1...I had the widescreen VHS tape, which I sold
on eBay as soon as I heard it would be part of the
"Gold Collection," which originally meant it would
    be out within two years.
The widescreen VHS had a documentary which discussed at
length in to the whole art direction
and use of 70mm for this feature film.

Hi Hendrik. Actually the pitch change associated with PAL speed-up is not inevitable. It is possible to compensate for it in the encoding process in order to obtain the correct pitch.
Anyway, without wishing to reopen that particular can of worms, I was posting the info on this forum (as opposed to the Regional Forum) mostly to alert readers that an R1 announcement now seems likely, and to highlight the possible extras.

When I originally purchased the VHS tape, it was P&S. It also included the documentary, showing how wonderful it was in widescreen.
I wrote to Disney, furious. "If you are going to do a pan and scan movie, why be stupid enough to do a documentary extolling the virtures of 70mm widescreen."
I heard nothing from them, however, about 6 months later, the widescreen VHS tape arrived in my mailbox.
They are good people after all.
Looking for the anamorphic version of "Sleeping Beauty" to replace my VHS tape.

Add me to the list of anxiously waiting. This and Cinderella are my most wanted. Alas, Cinderella has been announced for the Platinum Collection for _gasp_ 2007. We currently rent or borrow (for my daughter) from the library that horrible vhs version with the atrocious soundtrack.
