Does the DVR 508 have to be hooked-up to the dish when only playing back recorded programs? I'd like to transfer some programs to the hard drive of my computer, eventually burning them to a dvd-r. Dish is upstairs, computer is downstairs- see what I mean?

No the receiver does not need to be hooked to the dish to playback recorded stuff. After you plug it in just press PVR and you should be able to playback whatever you got on it. How do you plan to transfer from the receiver to the computer? Capture card?

I've been thinking of something similar. Since all the outputs are active on my 501, I'll use the A/V in on my miniDV camcorder and download from that via firewire to the PC. This may prove a good transfer in theory because of the high resolution of the DV tape. Going to try it this week and see. Since I only have a CD burner for now, I'm limited to SVCD format and only about 35 min. of mpeg2 on a disc.
