I'm writing a paper for my Chemistry class about Disc Rot and I need to know what causes it. What causes the breakdown of the protective layer, what chemical reactions take place, etc. I've found a few sites, and one is pretty in-depth about the process of CD creation, which will help for writing my report, but I haven't found any that give specific info about what causes disc rot.

I believe it is just air seeping into the layers of the DVD on dual layer discs from improper gluing... slowly destroying the disc by splitting it apart at the seams.
