I have a few questions about DirecTV. I'm trying to understand the signals/resolutions and how they are affected by an HD/non-HD Satellite receiver.

1 - Currently I have the cheapo/freeby Hughes non-HD receiver. Obviously this receiver cannot deliver 1080i to my HD capable TV. However, is the Sat Receiver delivering 480i, or 480p? Or does it change by channel?

2 - Once I buy an HD Sat Receiver will it switch between 1080i and 480p/480i depending on the channel?

    Thanks in advance

Satellite service are delivering 480i...When you get an HD satellite reciever it wiil recieve HD channels in it's native 1080i and you have the choice of watching the standard channels in 480i or having your HD satellite set top box upconvert standard channels to 1080i...

The satellite delivers 480i but if you have an HD ready TV it likely converts that to 480p I think.

The vast majority of HD-ready TVs convert everything to 480p that comes in as 480i. Not 100% of them, but the vast majority.

With today's DSS, that's not necessarily a good thing, due to deinterlacting artifacts. With DirecTV's new satellite, though, it should get better real soon now.
