Wolfgang Peterson, almost forgot about him, Das Boot was a huge favorite in my late teens watched it many times back then, one of only a handful of European films that made it to my collection.
Enemy Mine is another favorite that I watched many times in the 1980's, a sort of sci-fi remake of John Boorman's Hell in the Pacific, I thought it was excellent.

I've seen parts of Airforce One, can't say I have any interest in seeing it all or anything else he's done, though one of these days I'll rent the full 5 hour version of Das Boot.

Das Boot is far and away my favorite of his. I have little respect for the rest of it, although I respect his abilities as a director. However, I find it absolutely shocking that he took the greatest story ever told and made Troy out of it. How can you possibly screw that up? It's impossible!
