Own all the titles here and will gladly rebuy all of them. :) I've also been lucky enough to see the majority of them in a theater, which is lucky considering I wasn't born until 1980. Saw EYES WIDE SHUT three time within 24 hours on its opening day and paid a clerk $75 to sell it to me a week early when it came out on DVD. :D

As for the shorts, they really aren't anything special and they really don't show anything that would be future Kubrick. FEAR AND DESIRE has some great camerawork, which fans should find interesting when compared to later films.

I know DR. STRANGELOVE is considered his great "black comedy" but I'd give my vote to LOLITA for that.

In order of merit:

1.Paths of Glory (1957) ****
2.Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) ****
3.2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) ****
4.A Clockwork Orange (1971) ***1/2
5.The Killing (1956) ***1/2
6.Spartacus (1960) ***1/2
7.Barry Lyndon (1975) ***
8.Eyes Wide Shut (1999) ***
9.The Shining (1980) ***
10.Lolita (1962) ***
11.Full Metal Jacket (1987) ***
12.Killer's Kiss (1955) **1/2

The first 3 are practically interchangable but I've given the edge to PATHS due to its amazing performances and because it's one of the most scathing and moving indictments of war whereas, say, 2001 is more of a cold, perhaps even hollow technological exercise. STRANGELOVE, then, is my favorite among his films and, witnessing George C. Scott's jaw-dropping comedic turn always has me scratching my head as to why he didn't try that more often in subsequent years (although I know that Kubrick pulled that performance out of him through devious ways:))!

P.S. I don't know if it's actually true or not but I once read in an Italian film magazine that A CLOCKWORK ORANGE was Bunuel's favorite film. In that same magazine (which probably was a special Kubrick issue published after his death), Kubrick's favorite films were listed as well - and there were some surprising choices to be sure. I'll try to remember them and post them later on...

One of the most consistent, thoughful and attentive filmmakers of our time - I was never disappointed by his films. Over time I've gotten more out of some than others - to me, '2001,' 'Dr. Strangelove' and 'Full Metal Jacket' (with 'Barry Lyndon' close behind) have great and complex revelations in them, whereas my fondness for 'Clockwork' and 'Shining' is more technical, than philosophical. 'The Killing' - meanwhile - I find notable for it's technical skill (which is dazzling) and in how it presages a good chunk of his later career.

My favorite is Barry Lyndon, although possibly Eyes Wide Shut is his best. Everything from Lolita on up is a categorical masterpiece and are among the topmost works cinema has to offer.

Thank god for Stanley Kubrick! Cinema would probably be a good decade behind it's current state without him, and I really don't think that's an exaggeration.

Day of the Fight - B-
Flying Padre - C

Nothing inherently "bad" about these, just pretty basic work. But I'm very happy to have finally seen them. Thanks TCM!
