The Rules of the Game (1939) - :star::star::star::star: - Wonderful film, better the second time.
The Grand Illusion (1937) - :star::star::star::star: - wonderful anti war piece, top 5 all time, has a great commentary on the DVD btw.
The Crime of Monsieur Lange (1936) - :star::star::star::star: - A better and more entertaining film than Rules of the Game even
A Day in the Country (1936) - :star:1/2 - complete tripe, a five minute idea stretched to an excruciating 40, a bit poigant but mostly annoying.
Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932) - :star: - a comedy with a 'realistic' Chaplin esque character who rapes a woman who helps him. Naturally she's happy afterwards; I hate these sorts of attitudes towards sex. This film has performed the rare feat of lowering in my estimation after the fact. George would probably really despise this film.
La Chienne (1931) - :star::star:1/2 - Typical melodrama plot with a bunch of hysteric dramatics. Wonderful performances and incredible camera work though.

Ranking:
  1. Grand Illusion
  2. Crime of Monsieur Lange
  3. Rules of the Game
  4. La Chienne
  5. A Day in the Country
  6. Boudu Saved from Drowning

1. The Rules Of The Game - A
2. The River - A-
(even though I know Renoir was forced to use non-actors in some of the principle roles, it still drags the film down a notch)
3. La Bete Humaine - A-
4. French Cancan - A-
(fun and exuberant, but would probably be a "B" movie without the presence of Gabin)
5. Elena And Her Men - B+ (fun to watch Ingrid Bergman in something so light and breezy)
6. The Grande Illusion - B+ (I really need to watch this again)
7. The Crime of Monsieur Lange - B+
8. Boudu Saved From Drowning - B
9. A Day in the Country - B
10. The Lower Depths - B
11. The Golden Coach - B

Own: 0 (always intended to buy Rules of the Game but never got around to it)

JEAN RENOIR

I've only seen The Rules of the Game, which I quite liked. Not (IMO, of course) the greatest film of all time, by any means, but definitely very good. I guess I should see The Grand Illusion, which seems to be his most talked about film. I'm also interested in seeing his version of The Lower Depths, having seen and enjoyed Kurosawa's.

That's OK. This was the type of bad film that certain uppity critics love so much, that I'm absolutely shocked that one of them didn't put it on their S&S list, instead of Citizen Kane. :)

Arguably the greatest French film-maker ever; it's a pity that, unlike Luis Bunuel - a director with which he shared some characteristics and actors, not least in having both tackled Octave Mirbeau's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID - his final years were disappointingly unproductive. I'd love to watch the rest of his films particularly NANA (1926), LA CHIENNE (1931; remade by Fritz Lang as SCARLET STREET [1946]), NIGHT AT THE CROSSROADS (1932; a film which Jean-Luc Godard called the greatest thriller ever) and EXPERIMENT IN EVIL (1959; Renoir's version of "Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde")!

Updated with Boudu Saved From Drowning - B

I would dispute Adam's contention that Boudu rapes the wife. She is clearly physically interested in Boudu prior to the encounter. It is bourgeois convention that holds her back. Convention that Boudu spends the entire film thumbing his nose at. Her "no's" are a simple self-delusion/justification, allowing her to alleviate any guilt she might feel for both defying convention and cheating on her husband.

I'd watch the film again if only because the quality of the VHS I saw would be in the bottom 10% of all VHS I've seen (probably the worst would be a matter of Life and Death but that didn't stop me from loving it.
