A Place in the Sun is a famous film I've been wanting to see, though Halliwell's film guide says it's overblown, overlong and over-praised.

    Maybe it's Halliwell who's overblown.

    1. Giant - A (A film elevated and carried by the singular performance of James Dean. I would give it an "A" based simply on the "striking oil and then going to rub it in Rock Hudson's face" scene alone. If anyone thinks James Dean was all hype, I would point them to this film.)

    2. A Place In The Sun - A- (In some ways similar to Giant in that it is really carried by Montgomery Clift, but I also find this to be an involving melodrama about class conflict. It also has some excellently directed scenes, like the boat scene, and the climax)

    3. Shane - B+ (I really need to see it again. I watched it in a high school class on a 19" TV)
    4. The Talk of the Town - B-

I also think I've seen Woman of the Year but I'm not sure, and probably watched The Greatest Story Ever Told as I used to watch all those biblical epics on TV with my Mom but Ten Commandments is the only one I really have any memories of.

Own: 0 (Because of the previous problems with Giant, but I'll probably buy the Dean box

I would like to see Swing Time, Penny Serenade, Gunga Din and I'm intrigued by a possible double feature of "What Fur" and "The Undie-World".

    Giant (1956) - B
    Woman of the Year (1942) - B+
    Alice Adams (1935) - B+

I keep seeing Anne Frank and A Place In The Sun for cheap, so I'm pretty sure I'll blind buy those eventually.

Yes, Obi-Wan! While I mostly respect the late Leslie Halliwells opinions, his often pithy comments on some of my favorite films has had me throwing the film guide across the room at times.[IMG]

If I'm in the right mood and it's on the telly I will give A Place in the Sun a shot.

Saw a documentary about George Stevens last night. It cleared up one thing, which is why early in his career he was making such great, light-hearted films as Gunga Din, The More the Merrier, The Talk of the Town and Woman of the Year, only to later only make dramas and soap operas. Even his comedies touched upon serious social issues, but at least they were comedies. So what happened? World War 2. He went over to Europe and took film for the Army, and apparently what he saw so disturbed him, that after WW2, he could never again bring himself to make a comedy. What a shame. [IMG]
