Something's Got to Give isn't a film per se, it's an uncompleted, unreleased film (due to Marilyn Munroe's death). Since only about a reel of footage exists, I don't know why it has been included here.

1. A Star Is Born - A (up there with West Side Story for best cinematography in a musical, love this one, Judy's last hurrah and a great James Mason performance)
2. My Fair Lady - A (My personal motto "The Lord above gave man his hands for working BUT wit a little bit of luck...")
3. The Philadelphia Story - A (still wondering how Stewart won an Oscar in this when Cary Grant is the star and pretty much blows everyone off the screen.)
4. Adam's Rib - B+
5. Pat And Mike - B

I love George Cukor, I don't think he gets the respect he deserves.

My Fair Lady (1964) (I own this from some musicals box, but I haven't watched it yet)
Something's Got to Give (1962) - The footage from this is included in the Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days documentary and I don't think it looked too promising...
Let's Make Love (1960) - C-
A Star Is Born (1954) - B+
Pat and Mike (1952) - B+
The Marrying Kind (1952) - B
Born Yesterday (1950) - A-
Adam's Rib (1949) - A
Gaslight (1944) - A-
The Philadelphia Story (1940) - A
The Women (1939) - B+
Holiday (1938) & Sylvia Scarlett (1935) - I REALLY want a release of these two!
Little Women (1933) - A-
Dinner at Eight (1933) - B+

So, being informed and sharing information equals being 'elitist"

If one does have a superiority in matters of knowledge or taste (and I'm not referring to myself), it is only perceived as offensive to those who feel threatened by it...and no one else.

NEWS FLASH: All of these poll threads are a form of snobbery, we are all ranking films as per our 'taste', separating what we individually consider the wheat from the chaff.

In theory, anyone reading these threads looking for movie recommendations based on our ratings (which I believe was one of Jim's intentions regarding these threads), will more than likely pass on any film that receives a predominately one :star: or BOMB rating, thus "tending to rebuff, avoid, or ignore those regarded as inferior"...the Merriam-Webster definition of 'snob'.

Jim's a snob!!!! :D

I, on the other hand, intend to watch every single film that I have access to...even the really, really bad ones that no one else bothers with, will totally disregard the snobbish ratings presented here, thus not "tending to rebuff, avoid, or ignore those regarded as inferior".

Try again, Jim :rolleyes

Stepping into dangerous ground:
There are two possiblities:

1. It is possible to be objectively superior in the matter of taste. In which case, what you said may be true.

2. It is not possible to be objectively superior in the matter of taste. This happens to be my opinion. And if you believe, as I do, that no ones taste ever could be superior to anyone else's in an objective fashion, then anyone claiming to have superior taste certainly would be offensive to people who were in no way threatened, simply offended.

To be more specific, I get bashed all of the time for my taste in film. Often, this is just good natured debate. But occasionally it goes past that. Never has it led to my feeling threatened, but I have occasionally been offended.

Now, matters of knowlegde is a different things. Yes, person A can objectively know more than person B about a certain topic. And, depending on the circumstances, I can see where person B might be threatened by person A's superior knowledge. But certainly, lots of other people (who may or may not know more than person A about the topic), can be offended by person A's attitude of superiority, without being threatened by it.

Quite true, George.

But...it is possible that someone could have superior taste, in terms of relation to their experience.

Obviously, someone who has seen 20,000 films has better taste than someone who has only seen 5 (extreme example), if only because they have more to pick and choose from.
Your objective taste does vary based on your exposure and experience...so in theory, someone could have superior taste. I would say that I have better taste in film than I did 20 years ago.
Of course, if someone did have superior objective taste (or any taste), to belittle the taste of others would be offensive and insulting, I agree.

Having superior taste and claiming to have superior taste are two different things.

This is something I've never done here on the HTF...something I can't say for Jim K.

I'm not sure that I'm following you. If you're saying that for a given individual, that person at Time T+x has improved taste than that same person at Time T, because in the interceding time, they had watched additional movies, then that's one thing. Not that I agree. :) That person has more films in which they can apply their taste, and make a judgment about. That person is more knowlegable. But that person's taste, at least in so far as the films they'd already seen by time T, may or may not have improved, or even suffered. My taste is different (better?) than when I was 12, but not so much because of all the extra films I've seen since then, as because of changes in myself, changes that would have happened even if I'd seen no movies in the intervening years. My current opinion about Earthquake would be the same, even if I hadn't seen many films between 1974 and today. Conversely, I don't think my taste has changed much at all during my adult life, and once dementia sets in, my taste may actually deteriorate (certainly my knowledge will).

Now, if you're saying that the taste of individual X who's seen N+n movies is somehow superior to the taste of individual Y who's only seen N movies, I disagree far more vehemently. X may (depending on any number of factors, including the size of n) be more knowledgeable about film than Y, but certainly not with superior taste in any objective sense.

Can you name any one person who (whether they've seen more or less films than you), you will admit has better taste in film than you?

I can't. If I ever found such an individual, who I had to admit had better taste than me, then I'd have to logically adopt their taste in films, start liking films I didn't but they do, start disliking films I didn't but they do, etc.

Of course after adopting said person's taste, they'd no longer be superior to me now would they. And it wouldn't matter if they'd seen more films than me - since I'm admitting they have better taste than me, I'd just blindly accept their opinion of the films I hadn't seen - until I did see them, and then if my opinion were different, I'd either have to adjust my opinion, or no longer admit that they had superior taste to me. :)

This was entertaining until George turned a debate into mathmatical equations. I skipped those classes for a reason! :D

This whole thing is silly.

1. I'm sure Bill has many better things to do than plotting to sink your threads Jim.

2. Bill is the least film snobby person I know. He will watch literally ANYTHING. He willingly, by himself, paid money to sit in a theater and watch Agent Cody Banks, The Princess Diaries 2, and every "Tween" and Teen-sploitation and emasculating chick flick vehicle Hollywood churns out just because he loves to go to the movies. Now he may be clinically insane and stripped of his "guy" card, but a film snob he isn't.

3. This was a really good idea you had Jim, and I'm enjoying seeing which directors pop up everyday and reading everyone's opinions so don't stop unless you want me to pick it up and start doing it with all my snobby directors. ;)

Glad to see that I can irritate you even without giving film opinions. :)

Jim,

I too hope you continue. Too many great directors that you haven't listed yet (especially the ones that Brook and Bill won't think are great directors!) :)
