I'm not as keen on Lean as most. I love one, but find others ranging from OK to vastly overrated.

I much prefer the older films over his 'British stiff upper lip/for Queen and country" nonsense.

DAVID LEAN

A Passage to India (1984) - :star::star::star:1/2 - love it, want to see it again
Doctor Zhivago (1965) - :star::star::star::star: - inspiring and sublime, I never expected an affair story to be those
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - :star::star::star::star: - perfection on an unmatchable scale (number 2 all time)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) - :star::star::star::star: - fastest long film there is (outside Great Escape)
Oliver Twist (1948) - :star::star::star::star: - that long version is just so incredibly amazing and juicy
Great Expectations (1946) - :star::star::star::star: - the critics favorite, probably because the books a bore
Brief Encounter (1945) - :star::star::star::star: - another one of those romances that shouldn't be this good, but it is

And I would have seen all the rest (or all but one or two) on FILM at the Lean retrospective two years back but the damned MTA decided to strike for the month it was going on. I was furious (still am!).

RANKING:
  1. Lawrence of Arabia
  2. Bridge on the River Kwai
  3. Oliver Twist
  4. Doctor Zhivago (tie)
  5. Brief Encounter (tie)
  6. Great Expectations
  7. A Passage to India

Again, I haven't seen very many of these. It's funny, because I consider Lawrence of Arabia to be one of the greatest films I've ever seen. I guess it's not that funny, most people have probably seen these three Lean films and no others. Here they are ranked:

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Doctor Zhivago (1965)

Lawrence of Arabia 6/5 (Best film ever made by a wide margin)

The Bridge on the River Kwai 5/5

Oliver Twist 5/5

Doctor Zhivago 4.5/5

A Passage To India 4.5/5 (very underrated movie)

Brief Encounter 4.5/5 (beautifully done)

Great Expectations 3.5/5 (I like this less than many, I need to see it again)

I have also seen Summertime and Ryan's Daughter both of which also come in around 3 to 3.5 ratings.

They need to get Hobson's Choice on DVD.

I definitely consider Lean one of my favorite directors, based largely on the top 6 movies I listed above.
