Well, I just picked up my first Tivo device, the Hughes HDVR2.

Setup was a snap, and the first time I paused live TV was like magic.

Picture quality is over the top. No degredation in the recorded image as it is a straight dump from the satellite feed to the hard disk. I had no idea how good the recorded picture would be, I was sooo used to VHS tapes.

Tomorrow I shall run an additional coax from my dish so I can use the dual tuner feature, already the wife and I had stuff coming on we wanted to record at once!

I doubt the VCR has much life left in my living room after today.

    Welcome to the TiVolution.
You might want to look into a multi switch as you will soon be wanting another, esp when you realize it only costs you an additional receiver fee, no additional TiVo fee. I have 4 DTiVos [IMG] I cant stand to watch live TV. 1 is a DD movie server. I have also expanded the recording time on 3 of mine. Something else to consider after its out of warranty.

    Travis,
My wife was a real skeptic as well as was myself but I'm hooked now. If only Directv would offer my locals in T-Town I'd get rid of my VCR completely. This is supposed to happen soon but we'll see.

Oklahoma City locals are on the 119 satellite. If you don't care about the local news, you can "move" there. That means changing your service address to an OK City address but keeping your billing at your current address. You would also need an eliptical multi-sat dish.

Are there any advantages to having Direct TiVo unit and a regular DSS receiver with a stand alone unit? We are moving to a new home in mid January and will be getting Direct TV for the first time (always had cable before). I have a series 1 TiVo (HDR312) which I upgraded with a 80G Maxtor drive. We also have a lifetime subscription which I assume would not be transferable?

We have one of those deals where we'll get two Hughes receivers, a DLNB 18' dish, and installation...all free, so I may have an eye on upgrading in the future...maybe even to an HD capable receiver.

Thanks in advance for the info and insights,

    Thos.
