I have a new Philips 6000R DirecTiVo tuner, which was installed 4 days ago. I bought a wireless phone jack to use with it, but the installer told me that DirecTiVos have problems with wireless jacks, so I just strung the phone line across the room directly to the jack until I could figure out how to hide it.
In the meantime I have been reading about the new dual tuner upgrade and according to the manual, Tivolution magazine and Showcases will now be downloaded to my receiver via the satellite instead of the phone. It cautions me to leave the receiver plugged into a phone line, tho', because " software updates and other types of information are delivered thought it." Does anyone know what types of "other information" this might be? My original DTV receiver also claimed it needed to be plugged into a phone line at "at all times," but I only plugged it in when I wanted to order a PPV movie -- a rare event in my life. I never had a single problem with the system when it was not plugged in, so I am now wondering if I really need to keep the TiVo connecteed to the phone once I have activated the upgrade. And if I do need to keep it plugged in, has anyone here every used a wireless jack with their system and had problems? If I really don't need or can't use this thing, I am going to return it and get my $55 + tax back from CC.
    Thanks if you can help,
    Deborah

I have a Tivo connected with a wireless phone jack that has been working fine for 6 months. Make sure it is the type that works with modems. Should say so on the box.
Not sure about the DirectTivo needing to update with the phone line. I'm sure you could get by plugging it in once a week or so, except when you need payperview.

I believe that DirecTiVo only needs the phone line for PPV and Sports subscriptions. It gets all the guide data off the satellite...

The DirecTiVo does get all of its guide data from the satellite, plus with the new software upgrade it also can receive Showcases and TiVolution Magazine from the satellite, although in some instances it may need to download that kind of stuff using the phone line as before.
In any case, it still needs to be connected to the phone line, at least periodically. I wouldn't leave it unconnected for more than a week at a time. When you connect it, you can force it to call right away and then when the call is complete you can disconnect it for another week.

    Joel and Wayne,
Thanks for the replies. I guess what I should do is set up the wireless phone jack, which incidently does say it works with modems, and force a call to see if it goes through. Then I should try odering a PPV and if that works, I guess I can assume that the jack will work with the DirecTiVo unit.
    Cheers,
    Deborah
