I just got Direct TV yesterday without Tivo.
I want to know if theres something you can do to record something with your VCR while watching something else.
I am sure someone has come across this question before or had to deal with this.
I want to watch Alias tonight while recording Arrested Development.
Also, how do you record shows on your VCR timer? Can you record multible shows from different channels?

Some receivers can operate a VCR, most can't. Set the timer on the VCR for the shows you want and make sure it is set on the correct channel (3 or 4) or the correct input (aux). Then pick the programs in the guide you want to record. Again, this two step process would be eliminated with a DirecTivo.

Not sure what you mean here, but as many shows as you want to record simultaneously, you have to have that many sat receivers and VCRs.

Thanks for the help. I am beginning to think I should have gotten the Tivo with it.
How much do those range in cost?

Are they extra per month or just a flat fee after you buy them?

$5 extra month, unless you have the top tier package which makes the Tivo free. The good news is you don't have to pay a mirror charge to do the "record two at a time/watch either or 3rd previously recorded show" thing if this is your only receiver. If you had 2 regular receivers, and wanted to use one to record while you watched live on the other, you'd have to pay a monthly mirroring fee.
