    Hi
I have a tiny budget and started with a samsung HDTV and a Pioneer progressive scan DVD. I don't watch cable or broadcast TV, only DVDs. As far as picture quality goes, do I need a tuner or receiver to obtain the best results for playing a DVD disc?
    Thanks

A receiver won't affect your picture quality at all.
The receiver would be your first step in getting 5.1 surround sound though.

    Thanks Rob
Yes, for sound I know I have a ways to go, but its good to know that at least my picture quality will be up to snuff (I'm using component connections). Am I right that my picture will be 420p, or will it be better?

Rob is correct in terms of A/V Receivers. However, I thought at first you were talking about digital HDTV tuners/receiver for watching HDTV Over The Air. In which case if that is your question, then no, this will not help DVD playback at all. Now, in terms of getting the best picture, make sure your DVD player is set to output progressive. It doesn't know to do that automatically, so you need to rear your manual and find out how to do that. It may be a switch on the back, I've seen that, and more likely a menu option that you need to turn on.
