Digital Optical Audio dirty (1 Viewer)

I am trying to get my Digital Audio to work, but I am unable to get any sound. The cable had been out in my shop for over a year without the small rubber cover over the end. When I first hooked it up I was getting sound, but about every 5 sec. the sound would cut out and come back. Now the sound doesn't work at all. Is there any way to clean the cable so that I wont have to spend more money to get a new one?

You should just be able to wipe off either end. As long as you see light and there are no scratches, it should work.

My guess is that isn't the problem though.

Try the cable in someone elses system and see if it works. I doubt the cable is broke.
