Same here. I think downloading is mostly useful for taking content with you on portable devices and/or when you'll be without internet service.

Downloading is also useful if you're having connection issues or video glitches. I've had one or two titles that were dropping frames while streaming, but were fine once downloaded.

Is Friends the edited, open mask/cropped widescreen version that’s on BR?

I don’t believe they are edited. They are presented as broadcast on NBC. The DVDs I believe had scenes added in.

@Robert Crawford , have you been able to compare the HD stream of the The Tall Men available on iTunes with the new Twilight Time Blu-ray release? Has anyone? I'd like to pick this up, but am a bit reluctant to spend $35 on the TT disc.

I passed on the Friends sale, but just to clarify, the iTunes version is widescreen HD, so it is by that very fact not what was broadcast on NBC. It's open matte/cropped to fit the format, plus as far as I know, that was done with the syndicated version of the show, so it has also been shortened from the original broadcast version.

I looked into this about ten years ago when I decided to get the entire series. I chose lower resolution over edited/higher resolution/screwed up framing. Shows that were originally 4:3 and have been modified to 16:9 drive me crazy. Once I acquired the entire series on DVD and watched it was when I realized that the DVD releases were actually often longer than original broadcast. I consistently discovered that the extra little bits of footage in them are some of the best stuff in the series. Add in that what is cut for the HD versions is really some more of the best stuff on the show, because it's usually that 60 second piece before the closing credits, where there was often a line that the entire episode had been building up to. These are often fall-on-the-floor hilarious comments. Unfortunately the DVD version of the show is probably going to vanish, but it's worth seeking out.

Oh yeah, regarding the 4K Mad Max that was on sale. After I bought it, I feared it might have the awful "American" dubbed dialog, but it is the original dialog. Whew.

While you’re correct of course about the widescreen aspect (I was talking about the content not the AR), I’m pretty sure you’re incorrect about these being the edited syndicated versions from what I’ve read online. Do you have a link confirming these are edited?

From the High Def Digest review:

This release contains the broadcast versions of the show, rather than the extended editions found on DVD, though some episodes are longer than others.

No, I'm not buying that title again at that price point. I have it on German BD and on iTunes & Vudu in HD. Whatever is on the TT disc is probably the same transfer on the HD digital. If the disc goes on sale then I might change my mind, but I'm happy with what I have now.

I have all the DVD seasons which featured the "super-sized" episodes in their original lengths, and I was given the widescreen Blu-ray complete series box for my birthday several years ago. That's all the Friends I'll ever need.

Did anyone mention The Departed for $4.99? Just for grins, with the October Movie Challenge coming up, I dropped $9.99 for the 8 movie Leprechaun campfest.

...and 4 Rambo flicks for good measure, also $9.99.

For those who owned Gremlins from iTunes, it has just upgraded to 4K Dolby Vision.
