Does anyone have recommendations on a digital camera for under $300. I've done some research and I want something with 3x optical zoom and compactflash memory. I was looking at a Nikon Coolpix 2100 at Circuit City for $250. Any other suggestions would be helpful as well. I have a b-day coming up at the end of the month and my parents said they'd buy one. Thanks in advance.

Don't know much about digital cameras, but I'm very happy with my Canon Powershot A40. It has both the things you asked for, and it's in the price range you're looking at. It's a 2 megapixel camera (1600 * 1200). I read good things about it before I bought it, and I am not disappointed.

The Nikons are a very good brand. I own a Nikon Coolpix 4500, but the slightly smaller ones are terrific in their class too. Excellent optics and apparently they got the (micro-)programs right too.

The A40 has been replaced by the A60 which is what I have. Its a very nice camera with tons of options and settings that most digital camera's don't have. I was looking at the Nikon's as well be a lot of people highly recomned the canon.

Thanks to all those who responded. I ended up purchasing an Olympus Camedia C-730UZ. After doing some more research my budget went up and finally found a camera that had awesome features (3.2 megapixel, 10x optical zoom lens, 3x digital zoom, complete manual control among others) I've only had it for a few days but so far am very impressed with the ease of use and image quality. I've been experimenting with the manual features and learning quite a bit about photography as well.

Glad you made a decision.

I just wanted to add that I've had the A40 for just over a year now. Awesome budget camera.:emoji_thumbsup: Good menus, manual controls and picture quality.

My only fuss is noise in low light situations. But you can't have everything at a $220 price point and 2.0mp.
