I'm going to pick up another DirecTivo. The DirecTV installer gave me a Samsung for the original. I'm getting it at Best Buy because I have some gift cards to use - I think they have Hughes, RCA, maybe something else...I know all of the "guts" are the same, but is there any difference that would make 1 a little more desirable than the others? Thanks a lot.

My Phillips unit just died on me and I am looking for a replacement. I would also like to know what the pros and cons are of the various 40GB units.

    Regards,

Like Tim mentioned in his post, inside they are identical. They are all made at the same factory in Mexico by Solectron. Pick the one that looks the best.

Tuner or hard drive problem? You can just buy a new drive (with Tivo software installed or do it yourself) and drop it in. It's also much cheaper than buying a larger capacity DirecTivo.

I'm 99% certain it's the tuner. I'm thinking about trying to salvage the hard drive for a PC, but I haven't taken the thing apart to see what it would involve yet.

I picked up the replacment at lunch today. I went with a Phillips unit that had two S-video outputs versus an RCA that had only one (that's what the in-store spec sheet said, but they didn't have a display model and I kinda suspect its not true).

I asked the Best Buy sales guy if there was an extended warranty available. He pulled up the information and it said 4 years for $99. That's right, they are willing to sell you a four year extended warranty for the replacment cost of the entire unit. [IMG]

Confirmed: The spec sheet was wrong. The two units had identical back panels with one s-video output each. Oh well.

Cosmetics are the only difference in my opinion and I own several different models. My preference based on appearance is Samsung. My children prefer Hughes. The Philips DSR6000 was the only black model and it is discontinued and was a series 1. Whatever choice you make, TiVo is far and away the best DirecTV receiver in my opinion.

OK which one is the lightest?

Asking because my shelf is starting to warp because of weight.

Oh and also where is the best price? I see $99 at Best Buy right now.

i'm sure they're pretty darn close in weight as well. 99 bucks is the average price. i haven't seen it any cheaper, at least not b&m retail.

They all weigh about as much as a hard drive and a power supply. There isn't much else to them that has any weight. [IMG]

If you have been a DTV customer for a long time, and are getting your first Tivo, call customer service and threaten to switch to Dish...I got a free one this way.
