I want to play my Ipod on my AV reciever. I am going to use the mic out to rca in on the reciever. I have an older yamaha rxv995 reciever. I am not sure which input source to use for the connection. The cd input is being used so I see a phono rca input thats not. I plug the ipod into the phono rca input. I turn it on. There is an loud humming sound drowning out the music. It did not sound good. The ipod sounds ok. Did I damage it? Its an 8G ipod touch.

Phono inputs on receivers are different than the other line level inputs. Extra amplification and equalization is applied to the audio signal to compensate for the signal being generated by the turntable and its magnetic cartridge. You would not damage your ipod, but the distorted signal could damage your speakers if you played it too loud.

Thanks Scott, It was only for a second and not very loud. Just sounded bad. The speakers sound ok. I dont think they were damaged.

You should also make sure that the ipod volume is not up too high-- start it off low and raise it as you need to. I get distortion if the ipod's volume is too high.

Also be aware that the audio signal out of the headphone jack is not as high a quality as the signal coming out of the other (wide) port. It would be better to obtain a base and connect to you stereo through the base.
