While I was in various "O" sections at Borders today, trying to find the Odds Against Tomorrow DVD, I accidently stumbled across The Omega Man DVD with the original cover that was supposed to be released in 1999 and then postponed. Being the silly collector that I am, I bought it immediately. The back of the DVD has a 1999 copyright date on it and less special features than the 2003 release has on it. Was The Omega Man DVD actually released in 1999? Do I have something rare? Are many of these floating around?

The Digital Bits had a photo of this DVD on page 10 of their upcoming art for years but now it has been removed. But you can still see the photo if you search "Omega Man DVD" on Google Images.

I would venture to guess that you found a very rare thing, then.

Can you post the UPC #? I hate to be the paranoid type, but is it possible someone returned a bootleg or homemade edition to Borders? The reason I ask is Borders labels their merchandise with their own barcodes which they tend to use before using the actual product UPC. I'm thinking someone could always buy the new release and then slap the Borders label on something else to return it. Just curious about the UPC...

Also, since this is a WB release, it should be in a snapper, should it not? If it is I would think that would be reason to believe it is authentic.

It is in a snapper. I am 100% certain it is not a bootleg. It has the WB logos on the shrinkwrap. The Warner UPC number is exactly the same as the 2003 version: 0-85391-12102-2.

My best guess is that they had a bunch ready to ship in 1999 and then at the last minute, they postponed it. But obviously they still had some laying around. They certainly wouldn't print up new ones. The back cover is also entirely different than the 2003 version.

The 1999 version has the vintage documentary as an extra but does not have the "all-new introduction" or the "Heston Sci-Fi Movies Essay".

I guess the next question would be: Are there any other copies out there...?

    I have not opened it.

In fact, I haven't opened up the 2003 one that I bought in August. I am a little behind in my DVD viewing.

Reminds of when Little Shop of Horrors was finally rereleased on DVD and somehow Borders ended up with a bunch of the rare OOP copies on their shelves instead. They must have an in with WB.

Ummm, why would that one be a find, other than having an alternate cover? I prefer the 2003 cover - I think it was the original theater one-sheet.

BTW, I watched it a month or so back, & was very pleased w/ both the video & audio quality. It is mono, but very clear w/ fairly wide frequency response.

    Cheers,
    Doug

Because rarities like that one go for upwards of $100 on eBay.

A one of a kind thing like this might go even higher.

I was at Borders last night and all three copies of The Omega Man were the old release so anyone looking to add one of these "rarities" shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

I'm sorry that your find wasn't as rare as you imagined. However, I do appreciate you starting this thread, as I was able to pick up a copy of Omega Man with the original cover art at my Borders this weekend.

    Thanks again.
