I was visiting friends in SF so only caught some of it in spurts while my friend channel surfed (she was 3 days into quitting smoking AND premenstrual so I wasn't going to tell her to stop).

What I saw was kind of interesting. It sure was timely being in the Hamptons during both the Lizzie Grubman thing (too bad THAT wasn't filmed) and 9-11. It was also weird that the day after an interview with a local restaurateur, that he died in a car crash the next morning.

But why did all these rich people agree to do this show?

I didn't see it, but I would think that they agreed to do it because they love to be the center of attention.

Russel Simmons, the record mogul, was very upfront about it ... his lifestyle is an image that he sells. It's the same reason MTV Cribs is so popular.
