I've got all 158 episodes on VHS, and I was still willing to pay the $799 that DVDonDVD.com was suggesting would be the price for the full set. It appears that that price point has vanished, and we're all grateful for that.

If the price is $60 or so per season, that's a lot better, and fine with me. If a season of this show sells for $60, then $29 for a season of Soap is way too much.

The studios are still trying to figure out just what the public wants in terms of what shows are available and what the public will pay for them. Remember, shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation used to sell on laserdisc for $20 per episode making even the $799 price originally quoted quite a bargain by comparison.

This show will sell. Will it sell as well as a season of Buffy, Friends or The Simpsons? Probably not. But blame the studio if they're expecting sales of that magnitude.

If they make the show available in its entirety, I'll be thrilled. After that, it's simply a matter of deciding whether or not to buy, a decision which this writer finds to be a no brainer.

Your mileage may vary.

...I will not get the set for the original price of $44.99...
Foul! I'd cry "Foul!"
(Makes me feel a bit better about not getting in on that price earlier. Tough break on that though. However, I'm guessing there's gonna be a "2-Season Set" for even a better bargain on the Van D. horizon. There's supposed to be anyhow.)

Oh no it hasn't vanished.
Point "#5" on the DVD Info page at www.dvdondvd.com still says they're estimating the $799 cost of the "Ottoman" set..........
>> "We intend to make the price of each disk and the collection reasonable. At this time, we're estimating a cost of $799 with easy monthly payment options available. For this price, you'll get all 158 episodes, the bonus disks, the special DVD Ottoman, and some additional collectibles. You will also be able to purchase the disks without the Ottoman in boxed sets, as well as individual disks, all at very reasonable prices."

I'm buying this regardless of the price, and only pray that we'll get the rest. While there are some great episodes in the first two seasons, the first season in particular has some weak entries.

George ..... I'm practically positive we'll see Seasons 3-5, regardless of the sales figures for S.1 and S.2.

Heck, the DVD "creative team" has been working on these gorgeous re-masters since, what, early 2001 (??)....I doubt that all that effort will just waste away on a shelf somewhere, do you?

I imagine all 158 episodes have already been re-mastered, since it's been over 2 years since the project began (for what was supposed to be an October 3, 2001 release date, for the 40th anniversary of the premiere episode, "The Sick Boy And The Sitter").

Heck, I'd prefer DVD releases of virtually ALL older (1950s/1960s) TV series over a lot of the crappola that's gracing our boob-tubes in the 21st century!
I'm totally not knocking the quality of the show. Its an awesome show! I'm knocking the fact that the company releasing Dick Van Dyke is shooting themselves in the foot with their price point!

Sure, they'll be some buyers for this set (the hardcores. the wealthy fan.), but there's no way they're going to profit on it because of the price, and because of this, future volumes will be in doubt!

MTM had a much bigger fan base and nobody was willing to pay for that!

It appears (unless DVD Empire is in error) that Image Entertainment has had second thoughts on the MSRP of the Van Dyke sets.

Sounds Awesome!
Indeedy!

Considering the multiplicity of special features, the supposed painstaking effort being undertaken to ensure a great transfer, and the first-rate packaging (from the looks of it), this current price point is MORE than reasonable, in my estimation! Do you not agree?

Wholeheartedly.
(If I left it at that, this would be my shortest post to date; my enthusiasm for these is such, I'm at a loss for words :)).
:emoji_thumbsup: to Image and, as always, to those in front of and behind the cameras of The Dick Van Dyke Show.

The only thing that'd make it better, from a pre-release look of things, would be the inclusion of the many outtakes/bloopers that exist for the show. (Carl Reiner vetoed the inclusion of such material on the DVDs :frowning:)
I have an (unauthorized) collection of Van Dyke Show outtakes (approx. 24 minutes' worth) on VHS called "From The Cutting Room Floor; Volume 1". Anybody else have this tape?
Short of having the clips on pristine DVD, this VHS of outtakes is priceless IMO. Some great stuff on it. It is SO obvious when looking at some of these clips that everybody connected with the show was having a blast doing it. Too bad these cannot be included on a future season on Digital Disc.

And remember, Kurt, Bill B., et al ......
Keep checking Amazon too for a lower price on these sets. They'll probably re-trace their steps toward last month's price of $44.99 per season, wouldn't ya think? (Free S&H on the sets to boot. :))

Update...........
Today, Amazon added Season 2 to its website, but at the $69.99 MSRP still. ????
DVD Empire, when it added S.2, claims the sets have been lowered in price by Image to $59.99 each.
Now I'm wondering if Empire was in error.
Empire still has it @ the lower figure.
Can anyone confirm?

David, Image should be announcing their full October slate of releases (including the DVD sets) around the 1st of the month, so if not Friday, probably Monday we should find out the real info on these sets.
