Was that the cartoon version? I remember watching that when I was a kid (in the 90's)

It's impossible to tell. There was a live-action Dick Tracy show starring Ralph Byrd which ran in 1950 and 1951, and there was an animated Dick Tracy show which was syndicated in 1961. This DVD release could be either of them.

Which is (legally) available for download here.

EDIT: The link is to something else. (See next post.)

That's the 15-chapter 1937 movie serial. The 1950-51 syndicated TV show was 26 new episodes, and only stopped production because the star died.

I hope it's the 130 episode (5 mins. each) cartoon series from 1961. I have a few of the Ralph Byrd 1950s shows and they are not that great IMO. Does it say who is putting it out because I'm sure the live action show is PD. Not to mention the fact that most of the prints on this show have been long missing and not likely to be found.

The item number at DDD begins with SON which suggests to me that this release is coming from Sony. I wonder whether Sony has the rights to the the cartoon series and/or the Ralph Byrd series. In any event, Alpha Video just released a four episode collection (presumably, public domain episodes) from the Ralph Byrd series on May 23rd . . .

It could be the UPA cartoon series. This is owned by Classic Media, whose product is distributed by Sony. I seem to recall that a release of this was mooted around the same time as the withdrawn Mr Magoo series DVD, which was to have been put out by the same company.

And Mr. Magoo was also produced for TV by UPA, so it would make sense that they would both be under the Sony banner.

I believe I read a while back that the animated 61 Dick Tracy was to come to DVD and I suppose this is it. Will it actually make it to stores and be sold to eager fans or will it be mysteriously delayed and all printed copies locked away in a vault somewhere alongside the Mister Magoo and Harveytoons collections?
