man...this is tough. when i like an artist, i usually like their entire catalog. this is even harder because i'm not in front of my library right now, but here goes.
btw - let's see if you can guess that i'm an 80's fanatic!
Depeche Mode - violator
i could never have just one...this is still my favorite band of all time. of all the depeche albums, this one takes top honors. so melancholy yet happy at the same time!
New Order - low-life
next to depeche, these guys are my favorite. their music is so great..it just rocks!
Alphaville - forever young
the best electronic 80's new wave album of all time!
Duran Duran - rio
i promised myself i wouldn't be caught dead with a poster of those guys on my wall, but darned if i don't just love this album to death.
This Mortal Coil - filigree & shadow
the most melancholy album i own. very, very dark and moody stuff. if i ever decide to "end it all" this is the album that will be on repeat-mode in my cd player.
Peter Gabriel - passion
very dark instrumental music. i'm not sure how to describe this album...anyway, one i still love listening to.
The Rolling Stones -hot rocks
what a great compilation. what can be said about the stones that hasn't already been said?
Enigma - mcmxc. a.d.
the best cd to "get your groove on". i love the use of synthesizers combined with the chanting. very haunting.
The Crystal Method -vegas
an excellent techno-ish album. great beats and drum tracks. an excellent cd for when i need to get amped.
INXS -shaboo shoobah
this is one of the very first tapes i had that got me into alternative music. i still remember listening to it as a kid and thinking wow!
FGTH - welcome to the pleasuredome
a definite masterpiece. this is one of the first albums i listened to that made me realize there could be more to music than just simple jingles. i loved it the first time i heard it.
The Beatles - one
not enough of a beatles expert to know any better...but this sure is a great cd.
The Beach Boys - pet sounds
there's a reason this album is so highly regarded.
Underworld - second toughest in the infants
a great electronic cd. lots of cool songs. i like how not all of them are 'hardcore'.
Pet Shop Boys - best-of
i know that's kind of cheating, but every song is so good!
umm...how many is that? man, i would simply die if i only had 10 albums to choose from.
runner ups include:
concrete blonde - best of
moodswings - moodfood
sting - dream of the blue turtles
a flock of seagulls - best of
echo & the bunneymen - best of
sparks - best of
this mortal coil - any other album
the smiths - best of
i'm sure i'm missing a bunch, but oh well. you get the idea...

I tried- I honestly tried. However, when I had 10 titles listed, and I was still in the C's, I knew it was futile. Hell- Just choosing one from some artists proved frustrating. I feel like I'm betraying my best friends. I've spent far too many years forging strong relationships with the music in my collection to narrow it down to 10 or so, just like that. With that in mind, I figured eliminating 95% would constitute a pretty serious sacrifice. What remains is the 5% that I would consider absolute essentials if I were to find myself stranded on a desert island. As I cannot objectively review any of these titles, I'll simply list them in alphabetical order. Sorry for the quantity, but those of you who know this music should understand...

Barry Adamson- As above So below

Aztec Camera- Dreamland

Laurie Anderson- Mister Heartbreak

David Baerwald- Triage

Blues Traveller- Self titled

Kate Bush- Hounds of Love

Toni Childs- House of Hope

Elvis Costello- Imperial Bedroom

Something I've always wanted to say since I started reading Pulse magazine, knowing of course that it's all a game and just a chance to pop out favorite album titles...
Reading through some of the lists is amusing; I wonder how some single men could imagine spending the rest of their lives alone and choosing to never hear a female voice again.
I realize that lots of people aren't into female vocalists, but that's not the point. In real life we can just go over to the shelf and get another CD, but if we were REALLY going to a desert island, REALLY had to think about what it would actually be like and what we'd want with us to last the rest of our lives... Sound-wise you'll hear birds, you'll hear insects, you'll hear the surf and waves crashing, you'll hear all manner of natural sounds. You'll hear your own voice, either inside your head as you think or out loud if you speak up, and you'll hear the male voices on the CDs you brought with you. Years go by, no rescue in sight, and in the lonely, dark hours to know you deliberately chose not to be comforted by a female voice, well, I'd think it would warrant a slap on the forehead, at the very least.
It isn't a gay (or any political) thing, that's not what I mean. None of the gay men I know would choose to hear only male voices for the rest of their lives.
I just find it hilarious and odd, sorry. :D
Anyway, here's mine, no particular order:
Peter Gabriel - Security
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
Happy Rhodes - Equipoise
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Jane Siberry - The Walking
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
The Cocteau Twins - Treasure
And, because there are too many others to choose from:
Compilation of my own making 1
This would be made up of favorite songs by artists ranging from Tori Amos to the Bulgarian Chorus to Dead Can Dance to Kevin Bartlett to Victoria Williams to Rufus Wainwright to Milla to Anne Pigalle and dozens and dozens of others.
Compilation of my own making 2
This would be all my favorite tracks from soundtrack albums, ranging from Twin Peaks to Moulin Rouge to Lord of the Rings to Hair to Pulp Fiction and so many more.
Compilation of my own making 3
This would be all favorite classical and jazz, ranging from Mozart to Benny Goodman.

If I could have the complete Beatles catalog I'd be good. Throw in the solo stuff and I'll head for the island first thing in the morning(this island has ac and beer, right?)

After much hand-wringing and bitchin' about why I was only allowed 10, I'd probably grab:
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Neil Young - Decade
Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks
Genesis - A Trick Of The Tail
Talking Heads - Little Creatures
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Catherine Wheel - Adam & Eve
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
Bob Dylan - Street Legal
Jethro Tull - Songs From The Wood
...and I would secretly stuff an additional ten in my pants:
Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind
E.L.O. - Time
Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie
Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby
The Waterboys - Room To Roam
Dire Straits - Communique
Yes - Going For The One
Elton John - Captain Fantastic
Rush - A Farewell To Kings
John Haitt - Walk On
...then I'd pray the islands were close together and equipped with kickass systems so I could hear some of the awesome tuneage being played by my neighboors...especially the guys who took along T-Rex's Electric Warrior and The Clash's London Calling, Pixies and more Beatles and solo Beatles!!! :)
