What is the difference, if any, in Denon receivers with model numbers like AVR-1604, AVR-684, AVR-1804, AVR-884? All the specs seem the same to me, which is better?

If you go to the Denon web page you will see the diferences, namely power, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 sound, and I think component switching.

The 684 and the 1604 are the same receiver, w/ the exception that the 684 comes with half the warranty of the 1604. This is done to give retailers like Sears a lower cost version of the receivers to sell.

The same is true for the 884 and 1804.

As Thomas pointed out there ARE differences between the 1604/684 and the 1804/884. They are: 5.1 vs. 6.1 sound (which also means things like DD EX, DTS ES, etc.), 1 more TOSLINK on the 1804, more inputs/outputs, phono input, multi source/zone, discrete codes and assignable amp config.

Denon's website info on the 1604 says DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and Dolby Digital EX with power amps for 6 channels.
But on 6ave.com the 1604 is described as a 5.1 with no mention of ES or EX. So, how does one settle the question as to whether it's 5.1 or 6.1? Anyone actually have a 1604 please respond. Thanks.

I have a 1604 and I can tell you that it is indeed a 6.1 receiver. It also has component switching.
