Phil, you pretty much described the 2900,except for couple of things[features],which is why it will be really an updated 2900 IMO
The so called "built quality"[craftmanship] is the same on both[2900-3800] it appears that some of the parts are different, and that makes the 3800 heavier, but it won't equate better "quality" automatically, not by a long shot. ;)

I understand that the 3800 has beefier power supplies than the 2900, but I haven't looked inside both to compare.

Also, how many individually shielded separate compartments does the 2900 have as compared to the 3800? I know that the 9000 has five and the 3800 has at least three.

How do the audio DAC electrical specs in the 2900 match up against those built into the Denon 5803 AVR and the 3800 (....both are the same in these two - BB1738's)?

The above areas are examples of what I mean by the catch-all phrase of "build quality", but there are many other details that make up build quality too, with "weight" being only rough approximate indicator. (....unless blocks of lead are being used somewhere!!!)

The 2900 has BB1790 the latest that also has DSD capability as it's a uni player unlike the 3800/9000.So bedides the larger power supply[it's DVD player not an amp]the 2900 got it. ;)

Lewis,

Take away the 3800's Y/C Delay red square on it's DVD Benchmark because the later 3800's no longer had Y/C Delay and then ........ compare the quantity of red and blue squares for the 2900 and 3800 and see which you would rather own for pristine progressive images if you don't care about SACD.

I'll take a Y/C Delay-less 3800 over the 2900.

Phil.

Because I have use both with my equipment, I completely agree with you that for picture quality and DVD-A quality and redbook CD, the 3800 is better then the 2900.

I think that with the 3900, Denon want to fill the gap between the 2900 and the 5900 by ''upgrading'' the 3800, and not the 2900...

? Did I "step on some toes"? I thought you had certain questions about "built quality" of the 2900 compared to the 3800,now you wanna "count" read squares? I do care about SACD which is why I bought the 2900, and it's why I passed on the 3800.Progressive DVD playback was low on my list of importance,as my TV is still of an aging interlaced tube TV.

Lewis,

"Progressive DVD playback was low on my list of importance, as my TV is still of an aging interlaced tube TV."

I apologize for not being aware of your display setup. My setup is completely different and video quality is my highest priority. DTS/DSS/CD/HDCD/DVD-A audio being next in my priority. Even then I notice from Levesque's post above that perhaps the 3800's audio rates over the 2900's too.

BTW, with Sony going to the new hybrid CD/DVD-A disk, I wonder if SACD will die a slow death?

i was thinking of getting the dennon 2200 to replace my 7 year old toshiba. What exactly do you mean by transfer noise and vibration? How much was the dennon 2200?

My post referred to transport noise, not transfer noise. I found with some DVDs the Denon 2200 I purchased would make a whirring noise that was audible several feet away in a quiet room and there was a noticeable vibration of the unit. The noise was worse with some DVDs that may be slightly unbalanced and during the first few scenes on the DVD. I tried the demo unit at my dealer and it was better, but still made more noise than my Toshiba SD6200. A few other users have voiced similar complaints on forums, but most people rave about the Denon 2200. I may have a unit that it noisier than most. The Denon video and audio performance are a significant improvement relative to my Toshiba.

The Denon 2200 currently has an MSRP of $629. In my experience it is rare to negotiate more than a 10% discount on current Denon DVD players with a brick and mortar dealer, but you may find it at an internet seller for under $500.
