This the first I am hearing about a '2200. I know that the '1400 is coming out, though admittedly, I haven't heard about it being released in the US.

Keith - Yeah, I found nothing either by going through the "main" Denon site. However, using this Link to Denon DVD-2200 pulls up the "New Model Information" pdf on it. Looks promising - especially at (or below) the $600 price point (at least that's what I'm reading elsewhere). I wonder if it uses the same MPEG decoder as the 2900? I'll have to give my local Tweeter a call this morning and see if they have a release date for it.

Keith,

Perhaps the 2200 is the the "cheap" universal model we're getting here in North America. The 1400 PDF we had was from a Japanese site. The 2200 does look more impressive than the 1400 since the 1400 looked like a 1200 with SACD enabled. The 2200 appears to be a smaller version of the 2900 and also uses the Silicon image chip. It also appears to be better built than the 1400.

Anthony,

Thanks for the link! It looks like a great player!

Reggie,

I think I have found the DVD-Audio player for my second stereo system! It weighs 10.36 lbs., which is not too bad! Oh, and it has a coaxial digital output! Now that's the real replacement for the '1600 as far as I am concerned. Yes! :D

So, when's it going to be out?

Well I stopped at my local Tweeter last night. At least the salesguy had heard of the 2200. He actually had a spec comparison chart that had it listed. His quote was "It looks like a less beefy 2900..." Anyway, no release date was given, but it showed an MSRP of $629 - hopefully street price will be less. Waiting for this player is going to be tough!

Anthony, thanks for the info. I am hoping that the '2200 will street for less than $629.

I wonder what the main diff is between the 2200 and the 2900.....other than size.

It's on the Denon website now. They list retail availability as late August - early September. Let's hope so.

This is interesting...

I just read the specs for the 2200 on the Denon USA site, and other than the 2900 being seven pounds heavier, I really don't seem a real reason to pay $400 more for a 2900. If you read the specs, they are about 95 percent identical. I did have my heart set on a 5900, but feel that I just couldn't justify the expense at this time. I am trying to get a 16x9 display and the 5900 would tear to mcuh into my budget. I just bought a NAD 541i to handle redbook CD/HDCD playback, so the 2200 would strictly be for video, multi-channel SACD (with two-channel being handled by my SCD-C222es) and DVD-A. If the 2200 turns out to match the 2900 in the performance department, then there will be little incentive to go with the 2900 imho.

I was able to purchase a DVD-2900 for $649 last week. For $20 more than the 2200, I'm glad I jumped on it.

Dave - for only $20 more, the 2900 is a no-brainer IMHO! Was this a one-time deal or is there an authorized Denon dealer selling the 2900 for this price?

It's possible that the 2900 uses more DAC's. When I was reading the .pdf on the 2200, I was a little reluctant when it said "...the DVD-2200 uses a 24/192 audio D/A converter..."

I'm assuming it's using a fairly simple 6channel DAC whereas some of the players are using 3 stereo DAC's which can easily acheive a higher S/N ratio. Other than that, for the price the video looks like it should be something special, on paper that is.
