I just got a Denon AVR 2803. I see that on this model I can only select LFE + Main (for bass direction) if my speakers are set to large. On my previous AVR-87(1800 clone) I could select LFE + MAIN when the speakers are set to small. When did denon start doing this?

Jay: The LFE+MAIN is a subwoofer mode. It does not effect the Main speakers at all.

If you choose LFE, the sub receives LFE and any re-directed bass from speakers set as "Small".
If you choose LFE+MAIN, the sub gets LFE, re-directed bass from "Small" speakers and bass from the Main front speakers (when they are set to "Large".)

I don't remember back to the xx00 series but the newer Denon's are now this way.
